First all the prophets in Christainaity are the same as the Prophets in Islam with Jesus (pbuh) being a prophet
On medieval European maps Jerusalem was placed at the center of the world. Three faiths of one god, each looking to the same first prophet, Abraham (pbuh), look to its holy sites. Under the shining gilded Dome of the Rock lies the spot where Muhammad (pbuh) is believed to have ascended to heaven. Just beyond it is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, believed to be the site of Jesus (pbuh) burial. Nearby is the holiest site to Jews, the Western Wall of the Temple destroyed by Romans. This epicenter of faith is also the vortex of civil strife. Israel exercises de facto control and claims Jerusalem as its capital. Palestinians make the same claim but have no control, and so the dispute rages. Construction regulations dating back a century keep buildings low, and the traditional pinkish-white "Jerusalem stone" facings change hue as day progresses toward dark.

Muslims have 3 holy cities: Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem.
Jews have 1 holy city: Jerusalem
However, the explanation for the fighting is a lot more complex than just religious influence.

Mecca is just one of many holy sites to the muslim faithful. Jerusalem is the claimed capital of the palestinians and they want it to be reestablished as just that.

Supposedly an important mosque is built over the site of an important Jewish temple, though that's not the problem. People say that Jerusalem wasn't important to Muslims until Israel came to be.
