So, how do you shrink photos and save them in a smaller format on computer? Who does that and why? Also if that's done and then later you want to print it, do any resolutions, pixels, sizes, or anything need to be changed before hitting print, choosing size you want it to print, etc? Thanks

Digi Cam was specifically designed to provide a free, easy way of resizing pictures.

You can also do this in Irfanview

You do it using a graphic program. You can use the Paint program that is part of Windows if you don't have any better. (It is very basic - almost no features).

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint to start the Paint program
Open a picture
Click on Image in the menu
Select Attributes
It will open a window showing the current size of the picture (say 500x600)
To shrink the picture, put in a smaller size (say 250x300)
The picture will shrink
Save it at the new size

If the picture is not the size you want it for printing, you may want to resize it to the size you want before printing.

Open the photo in a program like Microsoft Photo Editor then go to Edit: resize: and select the size you want, entering the proper dimensions. Then save it. IMPORTANT: Use "save as" so that you can have your old version of the photo. Making photos smaller will decrease the resolution, so if you want to make them larger again, you will have a photo with poor quality. When you want to print it, you don't have to change anything if it is the size you want. Generally it will ask what size you want it to print, just verify that it has your specifications.

you can resize fotos with many programs, but if you do, SAVE as something else (i.e. rename it) that way you still have the orig. to work with again if needed & the smaller pic. whatever appl. you choose make sure to keep the "aspect ratio' the same. this prevents distortions. some good freeware app's are: pixia & irfan view
