Symptoms
Damage to the bone marrow, by way of displacing the normal marrow cells with increasing numbers of malignant cells, results in a lack of blood platelets, which are important in the blood clotting process. This means people with leukemia may become bruised, bleed excessively, or develop pinprick bleeds (petechiae).
White blood cells, which are involved in fighting pathogens, may be suppressed or dysfunctional, putting the patient at the risk of developing infections.
Finally, the red blood cell deficiency leads to anaemia, which may cause dyspnea. All symptoms may also be attributable to other diseases; for diagnosis, blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy are required.

The first indications of leukemia often are nonspecific or vague. They may occur with other cancerous as well as noncancerous disorders. Although signs and symptoms vary for each type of leukemia, there are some general features. Broad symptoms of leukemia may include:
Fatigue
Malaise (vague feeling of bodily discomfort)
Abnormal bleeding
Excessive bruising
Weakness
Reduced exercise tolerance
Weight loss
Bone or joint pain
Infection and fever
Abdominal pain or "fullness"
Enlarged spleen, lymph nodes, and liver
Chronic leukemia often goes undetected for many years until it is identified in a routine blood test. In fact, nearly one in five chronic leukemia patients have no symptoms at the time of their diagnosis. Most symptoms of acute leukemia are caused by a lack of normal blood cells. This is due to overcrowding of the blood-forming bone marrow by leukemia cells.

Symptoms
In its early stages, the disease may not cause any symptoms at all. However, the following are possible signs of leukemia
Flu or cold symptoms
Tiredness and shortness of breath when exerting physical effort
Pale complexion from anemia
Signs of bleeding caused by a very low platelet count, including black and blue marks occurring for no reason or because of a minor injury; pinhead-sized spots appearing under the skin (petechiae); or prolonged bleeding from minor cuts
Mild fever, swollen gums, frequent minor infections like pustules or sores in the anal area
Slow healing of cuts
Discomfort in bones or joints
Enlarged liver and spleen

The signs of leukemia are caused by the process of the disease: namely, that too many abnormally functioning white blood cells (leukocytes) are forming and "crowding out" the normal blood cells. The most common symptoms include:
*frequent infections and flu-like symptoms such as fever or chills (normally white cells would be fighting infection but they can't because they're not functioning properly and the ones that are left aren't sufficient)
*pain and swelling in different parts of the body - the cells tend to collect at the lymph nodes, organs such as the liver and the joints
*headaches, vomiting, confusion, loss of muscle control, seizures - can result if the cells collect in the Central Nervous System (brain & spinal cord)
*Anemia & thrombocytopenia - Increasing white blood cells in the bone marrow interefere with normal production of red blood cells and platelets, causing a condition called anemia (low hemoglobin) and thrombocytopenia (low number of platelets, sometimes associated with bleeding). Symptoms of anemia include: looking pale, feeling weak or tired. People with thrombocytopenia may bleed or bruise easily or find that their gums bleed or are swollen.
*other possible symptoms - loss of appetite, weight loss, and sweating, particularly late at night.

For most leukemics, the first symptoms are recurrent infections. They get flu-like symptoms, colds, low-grade fevers, etc. Eventually, they figure that it's got to be something more, and they get seen by their doctors, who run tests and find out that they have leukemia and thus are picking up every bug out there because their immune systems can't fight it. With treatment, leukemia has a pretty high remission/cure rate. Without it, infection usually kills the person suffering from it.

It depends on what leukemia you're talking about. My dad has CML, and he was losing his vision and bruising very easily. Also his legs hurt a lot.
