Plants need water to grow, without water they cannot make energy from sunlight. If there are pictures of this, then maybe you just cannot see the water. The plants' roots may extend so far below the ground which seems completely arid, but so far down the roots may hit the water table. Also, I know that on some of the Greek Islands, where there is little to no rain, plants can grow in the dust and on the rocks because they get their water from the morning dew and mist coming off of the sea.
