I believe it depends on your state (or province) adoption law. Where I live you have to go through the whole process no matter who you adopt from.
Ask a lawyer, they may even give a free half hour consultation, and/or search google for adoption laws in your area.
Good luck!

why do you want to subject a friend to that type of torture? losing a child to adoption is one of the most pschologically damaging things that can happen to a mother.
she might be in a state of shock or dissociation for months if not years and 'be okay with it' but then she'll inevitably "wake up" to pain that will never go away. it's called unresolved grief and loss and tends to increase over years and decades. Along with PTSD, secondary infertility, severe depression, and relationship problems later on ... this is not something a friend would inflict on another friend.
why not help her keep her child and help her find the resources she needs if poverty is financially coercing her to surrender?
"A grief reaction unique to the relinquishing mother was identified. Although this reaction consists of features characteristic of the normal grief reaction, these features persist and often lead to chronic, unresolved grief. Conclusions: The relinquishing mother is at risk for long-term physical, psychological, and social repercussions. Although interventions have been proposed, little is known about their effectiveness in preventing or alleviating these repercussions. " - "Postadoptive Reactions of the Relinquishing Mother: A Review" By Holli Ann Askren, MSN, CNM, Kathaleen C. Bloom, PhD, CNM In the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecological and Neonatal Nursing, 1999 Jul-Aug; 28(4):395-400

Does this friend want to place the child with you?
It depends on what state you are in. Contact an adoption lawyer where you are and find out.

yes you need to go through a lawyer, he should know what papers need to be made out. The mother will have to sign away her parental rights, it shouldn't be much work on your part just the lawyers. I knew someone who had her friend surrogate for her and they used her friends eggs so her friend had to sign away her parental rights,

It depends if she is an unfit mother and you have proof, you can go straight to court. You will still need a lawyer, so you're best bet is to talk to one. If she just wants to give you her baby all she has to do is give her rights to you and you go to court.
