When they hear Wicca it sounds like witchcraft and many many people have been taught that witchcraft is evil and related to the devil. Only in Wicca there is no devil and we don't worship any devil being. Witchcraft has so many meanings that people don't understand. There are different paths and certain names for that path but they are all grouped under witchcraft. When it comes down to it they are afraid of religions other then their own and don't even bother to get the full story behind it before they say that it's evil. Hey I don't know, I'm not a hippie or a housewife so stop bashing Wicca as a religion for only women. Savvy?

For some, anything that isn't their specific belief is bad/evil. For those who believe that way, no amount of explaining what Wicca is (or isn't) is going to change their minds.
Fortunately, there are still some out there who actually care about learning something, instead of clinging blindly to dogma without having to actually worry about thinking for themselves.
For Ann with regards to curses - "An it harm none, do as ye will" is the Wiccan Rede. Which basically puts the kibosh on curses. (However, the "Harm none" does not equal "Be a victim".)

Basically it all goes back to way before the Salem Witch trials, where religious persecution was the norm. People were always taught there was one god, only one god and if you don't worship that god the way you are told to, you must be evil. Even though in todays world, it is possible to be wiccan and worship the same god as other religions, it is still thought to be the complete opposite of God. The big problem is people really don't know what Wiccans believe, they just assume from bad television and religious sermons that it is some sort of devil worship. I don't think its bad, and I'm a christian. People just need to read before they speak. I wouldn't worry too much about it if I were you.

Wicca is not bad or evil. People who think it is bad don't know much about it so they think Wiccans worship the devil. I think Wicca is a very spiritual and peaceful religion.

Like some of the others said, as soon as they hear the word witch or witchcraft, they immediately draw conclusions. Why? Well, because of the past and because no one really bothers to explain it to them. Well, I do, when I can. If they listen, then good, if not then I tried. I don't go around 'preaching' it. But, if the subject comes up, I will certainly put in my 2, or should I say 50 cents! So, the next time you hear someone get it 'wrong', set them straight. It's the best we can do. The more people who know the truth, the less that know the lies.

It is because most folks perceive Wicca as witchcraft (black or white matters not) and in the Old Testament of the Bible there is instruction for people to kill witches.
Exodus 22:18, "Suffer not a witch to live."
None of Jesus' direct teachings that I have ever seen would come anywhere near encouraging people to this sort of barbaric behavior. It is frightening how people use these Old Testament teachings and supersede the teachings of the Son of God who came here to set things right!... to drag humanity out of the mud of heathen barbarianism and bring them to the light of knowledge and compassion. Let's hope He comes again soon because I think things are totally out of hand. He might have a thing or two to say about how religious leaders have used His Name to mislead and manipulate their followers!

Wiccan believe in four basic tenets:
1. All is one--they hold monistic and pantheistic beliefs that all living things are of equal value. Humans have no special place, nor are they made in God's image. They have the same value as flowers, trees, grass, etc.
2. They believe that you are (divine), which means that they possess divine power within themselves and that they are gods or goddesses.
3. They believe personal power is unlimited--that their power is not limited by a deity, as in christianity.
4. They believe consciousness can and should be altered through the practice of rite and ritual---they believe in the supernatural and the practice of altered consciousness through rite, ritual and spell casting in which they tap into (a power) and energy of the unseen spirit world.
They question is, how is evil defined? If based on God's laws of the Bible, it is clearly apposed to God because it glorifies man and seeks power apart from God. That is indeed evil !

There is such thing as evil spiritual powers but Satan isn't foolish enough to put that power in the hands of a bunch of unhappy housewives(wiccans) All power comes from God but God allows Satan to do what needs to be done to fulfill Gods plan. So Satan has dominion of the Earth and has Power on the Earth. He does not however share it with a bunch of hippie chicks. And if he did, it WOULD be evil because it does not come directly from God but from the Evil one. I know this because I am a former Wiccan myself and a former spritualist in the beginnings of training and touched powers that almost killed me. That is what made me turn to God.

Those who believe Wicca is evil are ignorant. They obviously don't respect other people's beliefs. I've been wanting to study Wicca, and I know it's not evil.

People equate Wicca with witchcraft, which has a number of negative connotations still perpetuated by the Christian right. Those who criticize Wicca do so out of ignorance, not out of any genuine knowledge. Don't buy into it.
