The expiration date is not truly an expiration date but a sell by date. It should be good for 4-10 days after the date on the container. The more fat in the product the longer it will last...skim milk has the shortest life...heavy cream the longest...I've seen heavy cream last a month after and buttermilk even for 2 months past the sell by date!

Most milk says "sell by" a certain date rather than "expires" on a certain date. “Sell by” tells the retailer the last day on which a product should be sold. It takes into account time for the food to be stored and used at home. You should buy it before the date, but don't have to use it by then. You should be able to use milk, say, for up to about seven days after the sell-by date.

Most foods are OK to eat after their expiration date. If the milk tastes good, and it doesn't smell its OK. That means its not rotting yet. They put those expiration dates on as a guideline not as the rule. Most non-perishable foods have expiration dates on them..like say canned soup, but they actually can be sold in a store for up to a year after its shelf life is up. You just have to be cautious of what you are eating. Have you ever opened up milk that has been rotten before its expiration date? I have. You just have to use common sense and also use your nose. If it smells bad, don't use it. If it doesn't...go for it. Most foods wont kill you even if they have gone bad.

That is a sell by date. It is for stores so that the milk will still be good even if it is close to the date. I used to work at Byerly's grocery store and would get free milk since it was past the date. I never got sick and my uncle, who is a doctor, says it is just fine. My cousin now works at Lino Lakes bottling plant and they date their food about a week short so you have about a week to drink it.

Cheers

Expiration dates leave a lot of wiggle room. They err on the side of caution. The most important thing to consider is the temperature that the milk was stored at. If it was below 35 degrees you can extend the expiration date by at least 3-4 days.

I don't know about drinking it past the ex. date. But my moms told me when I was a kid that you could use it for cooking up to 7 days after the ex. date.

I guess if it doesn't taste or smell spoiled you could drink it.

But that ex. date is stamped on the milk jug for a reason.

You shouldn't drink milk period. Milk can make you sick and kill you, or at least shorten your life. Cow's milk is for calves. It is definitely not good for humans. It can cause a lot of health problems. I think it should be against the law to sell milk for human consumption. If you will click on the link below and read "Marketing Milk and Disease" by John McDougall, MD", or any of the other links you will probably never drink milk again.

Definitely not! You will have to fork out money for the doctor as you will most probably suffer from food poisoning if you drink milk past the expiry date.
