Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties) are all on the same piece of land ("island"). They are, however, completely separate counties. Just because Queens and Brooklyn are abutted right next to each other doesn't mean that people from Queens are Brooklyn-ites (or visa-versa). By the same token, people from Queens are also not Long Islanders. By the way, Bronx and Manhattan are two counties that are also located next to each other on the same island... they are completely separate counties/towns.

OK! I can answer this but you will have to bear with me.

You have an Island called "long island". Long Island stretches from Rhode Island all the way to just across from the Island of Manhattan.

A Western section of that island is called "queens" which is one of the 5 boroughs of New York City. Aside from being a borough, Queens is also a county that is composed of many communities with separate councils and governments. For example there is Woodside, Jackson Heights, Jamaica. Getting to my point - one of those towns in Queens is called "long Island City". Long Island city is on the east river and faces Manhattan Island.

Now I will bring up one more qwerk of New Yorkers. Brooklyn and Queens are on the Island of Long Island, but they are boroughs of New York City. People that live and work there consider themselves New Yorkers and not Long Islanders. After all they are connected by the subway, they are densely populated areas, they are busy places... They talk about Long Island as something separate. If they are leaving New York City limits beyond Brooklyn and Queens, they say they are heading to the Island. Some one that lives beyond the borders of Brooklyn and Queens "lives on the island". People "head out to the island" for the weekend. So someone could live and work in Brooklyn, and then decide to take a trip to the eastern end of Long Island. Even though in reality he will not have left the Island of Long Isand at all because Brooklyn is on Long Island, he will say that he heading out to the Island.

Hope this helps!

No they are not the same. But, I think your friend is confusing Long Island, with Long Island City, Queens. I used to live in Long Island, and take the Long Island Rail Road to work in Long Island City, Queens, it's about an hour and a half away. It's near Jackson and Vernon Street.

Both Queens and Brooklyn are on Long Island. But I've never met anyone from Queens claiming to be from anywhere else but Queens. There are 5 boroughs (sections) that make up the New York City area. Manhattan(NYC), the Bronx, Staten Island, Queens and the best borough of all-----BROOKLYN.

I'm from Long island and was originally from Queens. Geographically, Long Island is an island approximately 120 miles long (hence the name) that is directly east of Manhattan in New York City. It technically contains the following counties (from west to east in this order: Brooklyn (Kings County), Queens County, Nassau County, Suffolk County).

In reality, when someone speaks of Long Island, they invariably mean only Nassau and Suffolk Counties, since Brooklyn and Queens are parts of New York City.

Simple geography, man. Long Island is the name of an isand which makes up the southeast corner of the state of New York, and it includes part of the city of New York: the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. So Queens is on Long Island. Queens is part of Long Island.

Long Island and Queens are not the same. Queens is one borough of New York City. Long Island is in separate counties of New York State. They are jurisdictionally and geographically distinct. Your friend is quite wrong.
