Just pondering, Does anyone really know what that meat contains? I think that McDonald's "hamburger" meat is a little bit more than just ground beef. I myself can't even eat there anymore, I was grossed out when I bit into a hamburger from there one time and a little piece hurt my tooth, hamburger meat shouldn't hurt a tooth, I mean this was like a little piece of bone or something. YUCK.

When I watched the extras on the "Super Size Me" DVD, Morgan Spurlock chatted with the guy who wrote "Fast Food Nation" and he said that the way the beef is ground up, one beef patty literally could contain at least a thousand different cows in them. One little patty! Makes me feel pretty sick.

I find bone chips in hamburger no matter where I go, no matter which store I get it at, even little neighborhood butchers where they grind it in front of me.

However, there have been some interesting rumors about the big McD's. One, a few years ago, was that they put worms in ther burgers. It wasn't true, but how did this rumor get started...? There is a meat preservative called sodium erythorbate (go ahead-- look it up!), which is approved by the FDA and used by loads of meat packing plants. Some people who could not read or pronounce it properly thought it was 'earthbait' and jumped to the wild, unsupported conclusion that it was worm protein. It was not true, but it was funny enough to be retold and retold, giving the false rumor a sort of pseudo-life.

What do the burgers actually contain...? Ah, I'm so glad you asked that. (You might want to refer to the Straight Dope, where I got this, so you may be assured that I am not making it up!)

There are two grades of beef which are not very palatable and consequently sell for a low price. (I can't remember the USDA names for them but let's call them Lean and Fat, for convenience.)

Lean contains very little fat, and is thus less flavorful and hard to digest. Fat contains little protein and thus less usable food value (eat fat and you gain weight.) So McD's figured that they could SAVE MONEY by buying them on the grand scale, grind them together and come up with a consistent quality of meat, equivalent to regular hamburger, but costing less overall, which they could then sell for the same price as regular hamburger!

It's perfectly legal since no non food additives are used, the Lean and Fat grades of meat (whatever they are actually called) are USDA approved for human consumption, McD's saves lots of money over what it used to spend on hamburger, they make a bag of cash and we wonder what goes into the burgers!

Pretty good deal all around, huh?

They probably get all the scrap pieces that can't be sold for money, like the pieces around the eye, face, butt, etc. and grind it all up. They don't filter through it, everything gets dumped in there, including eyeballs, bones, feet, whatever. Then, they compress the mixture into a patty and fry it, I guess.

They claim that they use 100% beef, but "beef" just means any part of the cow really...

It's ground beef and probably other meats mixed in. I ate a big mac cheeseburger tonight and it made me sick for a while. It's not just mcdonalds you got to worry about; it's taco bell and quiznos, because quiznos lays out everything out for you to see, and that stuff collects bacteria. Taco bell has all that beans, beef and sauces, and all that can make you sick. The only safe fast-food restaurant to eat at anymore is most likely Boston Market.

Bone will end up in all ground meat at one time or another.

Kangaroos in the 80's. Go vegan. It's healthier and you don't have to worry about ground up bugs, horses, kangaroos and rodents in your next Big Mac. That and you won't get fat from all the empty calories.
