What type of subjects can I talk about with people I don't know? Usually I don't know what to talk about when I meet people, and I get so nervous. What can I do to make myself less shy?

To be more relaxed would help a bunch, try not to be so worried about what you should or shouldn't say, just let the conversation flow and come natuarlly. Sometimes asking questions can get conversations started to, if you're really interested in getting to know people then ask them about their interests, and share some of yours, before you know it you'll be slapping your knee and reminicing the past with a new friend! Break outta that shell baby! Besides, it's better to atleast try and fail, than to have never tried at all never knowing the possible outcome, break that ice, and you'll be a smooth operator. I bet laying your worries to rest will help out alot, because if you're all tense and anxious then it tends to make a conversation feel more awkward (right?), but if you just be yourself and let the conversation flow then you'll open up and bound to be less shy, once you try this method and it works, it'll bump that confidence of yours up there a notch and you'll feel better about approaching new people. Relax, and be yourself, and you'll do fine.

Good Luck!!
Hope this helps :)

Talk about movies, tvshows and music. Then if someone says yeah, I like that too, than talk about more. That is the ice-breaker. If you read, talk about what you've read. But here is another kicker, if you are a student, get involved in some of the school activities or get a job at one of the local bookstores or starbucks. You can always make friends with co-workers.

Watch the news, read the papers so you can make small talk about current events.Ask people about their hobbies, books or movies they've read, where they're from...I'm shy, too,so I usually look around a bit and go to small groups of people.I've found it easier to focus one-on-one-or-two.
And,did you know, the the late Princess of Wales,Diana, considered herself shy?She once said that she just jumped right into the situation, and focused on one person at the time.

Maybe you have social anxiety. You just need to relax and not worry about what people think. Bring out your personality and don't let that shyness get in your way.. life is all about meeting new people and having fun.

There a few things you can do to make people more receptive to you.
1. SMILE. Always, always smile. People like people who are happy.
2. Mirror their body language & I don't mean that annoying thing your kid brother does.
3. Try and avoid being negative about people, places or things (at least to start with) Negative people are no fun.
4. Feel good about yourself.
5. Listen. We love to talk about ourselves right? Well let someone else talk about themselves. Nod or make appropriate comments occasionally to show that you are still awake.

I think that you should start off with having your best friends there with you so you will be more comfortable. Your best friend can start of the conversation with the person and you can take it from there and then before you know it, you have another friend. Good luck.

Idk about you but I faced the same problem and I put away my pride/ego to make the first attempt to say hi and make conversations. It didn't work out initially but after doing projects together, they realise what kind of person you are and open up to you.

You could picture strangers as your close friends and try to 'open up' and be friendly to them.

If they don't respond, just take it lightly and try again somewhere else. They are not worth your anguish.

Face your fear! A good conversationlist keeps up with current events. Look someone in the eye and say. "You know, you look really nice today." If they have any manners they will thank you. If they don't, don't waste your time with them. The key though is to truly be sincere. I mean, look at my picture to the left. Would you really say that to me without laughing? :)
