I could not scream or move. I felt like I was wide awake but I was helpless to do anything about it. Has anyone else ever experienced this? What is it?

I haven't done that for a long time, but I used too, it just kinda went away. It's terrifying and makes you afraid to go back to sleep, at least it did me.

I know some people who have experienced it whilst being relatively healthy but myself and most people I know who have experienced it do so when experiencing alcohol and/or drug withdrawels after an excessive bender.
The nightmares can be very scary and usually involve someone or something trying to attack you. These dreams can seem so real . The dream is set in the room you're sleeping in at the time so you think it's real and don't realise it's a dream, until you wake suddenly or the next morning with a clear head you determine it must have been a dream.
A few times whilst being attcked Ive been pulled out of bed screaming only to wake and find I hadn't moved. The wierdest was when I was hit over the head by a baseball bat and felt the pain later when awake.
Often I can't scream either but on the odd occaision people have told me they heard me screaming in my sleep.
All this on top of cold sweats, the shakes and continuous interrupted sleep.
So I hope this helps.
i don't know what it is but it usually happens when the mind isn't healthy ie when you have a cold or some sort of come down.

Yes, I used to get Night Terrors alot when I was little, like up until I was 11 or 12, and then I just stopped having them. It got so bad that I tried to stay up for days at a time, and i got bad grades in school and my mom couldnt understand why I refused to go to sleep and she just made the whole thing worse.

I know what you mean about the cant scream or wake up thing.

There were times where I had Night Terrors about having Night Terrors. I'm just glad I grew out of it and I hope it never never comes back!

Good luck, I know how frightening they are. Maybe if you could figure out what your terrors are about you could make them go away?

Oh my, oui..
It is awful..sometimes I feel like I am paralyzed and a huge black blob is descending on me..I try to scream and I can't. Or some big hideous bug is coming down from the ceiling..(which is weird, as I am normally fine with bugs)
The worst is when I think I can hear someone coming into the house and I cannot move or run..then sometimes I scream so loud that it actually wakes me up!

You may want to see a nuerologist if this continues. If I recall correctly, night terrors usually affect young children. We thought my son was having night terrors (he was screaming and clearly having a nightmare), but later discovered that he was having a limited seizure (as demonstrated by bi-lateral twitching of his arms at same time as open eyes blinking).

I later read that seizures and night terrors are closely related from a neurological sense. Also, many large cities have sleep centers where they study such conditions. Good luck.

Yes of course, night terror is a mental thing that happens when you are scared or depressed before you go to bed. If you keep on having these then you must see a doctor. Night Terrors are mental things but i've read they are also contacts to the spirit world... otherwise known as ghosts.
Let me ask you something, has anything happened to you before you got your first night terror?

ahhh

What you're experiencing is called "Sleep Paralysis". Night terrors are different.

Someone close to me experiences night terrors on a frequent basis, and they're unrelated to sleep paralysis. Night terrors are, in a nutshell, dreams that occur in a non-REM phase of sleep when dreaming is not supposed to occur. This may cause waking "visions", sleep walking, and often spells of panic and terror - which the person having it usually does not remember at all.

Google Sleep Paralysis for more information on your event. It's not that uncommon.

Yes as a child (around the age of 5). I was not able to scream or move and a big mallet (as in "order in the court") came out of the wall and hit me in the head. This happened a few times. Eventually I was able to turn on the light and scream to my parents.

Yes, my sister suffered from it all through out her childhood and she would open her eyes and cry but could not say anything or move her body.... it took several minutes to hours for her body to fully wake up... Doctors call it sleep paralysis... when the mind is still in a dream state but our bodies are catching up as it tries to wake up. My ex also suffers from it and he has to keep the TV or radio on (usually the TV) as a point of refrence to keep him grounded and in the here and now and keep him calm. I can't really remember experiencing it as a child maybe once but I experienced it as an adult one night in my sisters new apt. (1st night) I opened my eyes but I swear everything I saw was as if in a nightmare.. I saw images coming toward me and I heard my ex (in my mind) but it seemed real... I heard him plotting and saying horrible things about me... I knew it was not real and he tried to wake me... when he did he said I was making sounds as if I was trying to scream...it is the most horrible feeling in the world, you can't scream, you can't move, you can't escape... .not even to close your eyes to avoid the horrible images. It helps to have a pet, cat or dog... research shows that when your in this state that animals can sometimes bring you out faster by licking your hand or rubbing there head against yours, making familiar sounds or something of the sort... hope this helps.... as a christian I don't discount spirits and evil entites attempting to invade and drive us crazy but that's just my own opinion... that night in that new apt. with my ex that was a little too weird for me.....and yeah it is a good idea to pray immediately when it starts to happen because at least on he occassions I've experienced prayer helped my spirit fight and regain coherence at a time when I truly believe that I was under attack.

I used to have those when I was a kid the same dream every night it was awful. I look back at it now and it wasn't too bad but when you are 8 it is terrible. It maybe caused to stress in your life, or an experience that was traumatic that you haven't delt with

I have never experienced them but my man does, a lot. It is really scary for me so I can imagine how scary it is for all those who live with them.

Some people will say that you should pray-if that's your thing-for you to have a restful sleep at night.
Some will say not to drink caffeine before you go to sleep.
And others will say that it is your spirit leaving your body while you are asleep and returning.

Who knows what it really is.

Maybe a sleep doctor could help.

Good luck!!!
