Cats don't like change!! They have their homes, their routines and their people, and they like it like that. The poor kitty is probably very depressed, having separation anxiety, having NEW PLACE anxiety (!!!!) and is generally freaked out. That was a long time to be with someone -- and short of a medical emergency getting rid of an animal you raised should be a hugely punishable offense. Our animals bond strongly with us, and it hurts them to be removed, abandoned, rehomed, etc. They have the same emotions a child would in that situation.

Bless you for being worried. Just try to give him lots of attention, pets, treat, love, toys, etc. and help him adjust. Just remember he IS feeling all the normal emotions for the situation. Just be patient and calm and affectionate -- spoil him as much as he will allow -- and eventually he'll start to settle in. Don't force him. If he's comfy with the BF but not with you, then just give him time. Let him ease into it.

Good luck & take care!

GIve it time. If the previous owner had him since he was 7 weeks and he's 6 years now, that's a lot to adjust to. GIve it a few days to see if he relaxes a little. You boyfriend may have a scent or something that the cat is familiar with or something so that could be why he goes around him right now.

He's probably going through an adjustment period. His home and family he's known his whole life is gone. Period. He doesn't understand. And he has no idea if he's going to be staying with you, what kind of people you are, where he's allowed to go.
The best thing you can do is be gentle with him. Call him by name, and give him lots of praise. Make sure he can find his food and water and litter box, and that he has a soft place to sleep. Hopefully his old owner gave you the name of his vet. Take him in for a check-up soon.
Thank you for adopting an older cat. They are frequently overlooked because kittens are SO cute...........
And, please make sure he is an indoor only cat.

Give him a few days to settle in. Cats become very attatched to their homes, being in a strange place is going to give him some shock. Cats usually only eat once or twice a day so leave a little food down and he'll eat if he's hungry. I wouldn't worry too much, my family has adopted out a lot of kittens and only once was the cat so disturbed we had to take it back. Unless the cat is hurting himself or you guys, of course.

Sounds like depression. Cats hate change. It will take some time to adjust. Be patient.

He is just adjusting.. don't worry. It takes them a little while for their full personality to come out. When I got my cat from the humane society it took him atleast a month or two to get fully used to his new home.

Give him time, remember he's been in the same household since he was a kitten. Imagine how you would feel after spending seven years of your life somewhere you were used to and felt comfortable and then suddenly found yourself with in a house with strangers. Be gentle and patient with him, he will soon grow to love his new home if you make him feel loved and welcomed. When he feels comfortable with his surroundings, he'll eat, trust me.

Little of both, but mostly adjuisting. Every cat i've ever adopted from someone else, hid under my bed, for awhile. For along time my current cat woulnd't come out of my room or soicialize. But this year, when all the same guests came, he stayed in the ilving room.

Give him some time, he's probably confused and scared right now. He might just naturally trust males more than females but I wouldn't worry. As long as you're loving and take good care of him, he should come around.
