Philosophical debate is healthy. Questioning faith is important. Asking about the bible is productive. Debating doctrines is interesting. But WHY do so many people of many different faiths feel the need to sh*t on the Christian faith here? I see very little bashing of other belief systems (except maybe the Jews... they get picked on a lot here, too.)

Its their job. The Bible says to expect persecution from outsiders and non-Christians. We are seperated from the world because the Cross.

Christianity-bashing is certainly not limited to this forum.

I think a big part of the problem is that there are so many Christians posting messages that come across sounding holier-than-thou, or like the rest of the world needs to (and WANTS to) find Jesus, or like they're on a missionary quest to see who can convert the most sinners.

Sort of like beating a dead horse. And then beating him again. (sincere apologies to fellow horse lovers)

If I want to hear that stuff, I'll tune in to a television evangelist or go visiting different churches. I suspect many others who read and post here feel the same way and get so sick of hearing the holy rollers they end up lashing out in self-defense.

Or I could be completely wrong. That's just my opinion.

Peace and freedom to all.

The socialists in this country are trying to reduce the importance of religion in American life. Since most Americans are Christians, they are the obvious target.

All day in the media, the small-brains are hearing how bad Christians are, and how good atheists and Muslims are. Those people begin to believe that through simple repetition.

Once our faith is diminished, then they can break down the other institutions, and have a socialist country, where the only god is the government.

It's because there are so many Christians whose knee-jerk response to philosophical questions is to tell people to "read the Bible" or "believe if you don't want to go to Hell." If you don't want to get bashed:

(1) Engage in philosophical debate without quoting scripture. Quoting scripture to convince people who don't believe in scripture is pointless and frustrating for all concerned.

(2) Be willing to question and criticize some of your own beliefs. Atheists -- very justifiably, in my estimation -- think that fundamentalist Christian doctrines are barbaric and have barbaric social consequences. Stop condemning homosexuals, or do so on the basis of reason (if you can -- haven't heard it yet) if you want to convince non-believers. Stop talking about a loving God who condemns people to eternal torment. Stop talking about an omnipotent God who "mysteriously" lets crushing, torturous tragedy befall innocent people. Face the philosophical criticism honestly. You can question aspects of your faith without throwing all your faith away. You can have a *reasoned* faith!

I usually bash anyone, notwithstanding their religion when I'm served stupid things about their beliefs. Why? Because I don't want to know. I don't want to be God-spammed to hell (notice the double-pun).

Why can't ANY pious person be pious in their own home? Why do they feel the need to bolster their own love for their god onto me?

Do you hear me antagonizing anyone by proclaiming myself an atheist? No. To be so is my own choice and you won't hear me feed it to someone else unless someone asks. Either by proferring stupid stuff or asking nicely, as in a friendly debate but I do not see the latter here.

I hope that helps you understand why I post that kind of answers on those topics, even if I do so rarely. I try to stay far away from those.

I disagree, there is a LOT of bashing going on from both sides! My inbox is full of emails from "Christians" and only ONE that I've ever gotten was sensible and polite. Let's just say that all the other's were not written by very Christianly people.
Everyone is so concerned with what others think, do, and believe in that it makes me wonder how they possibly have any time to figure out what they themselves think, do, or believe.

Everyone gets "sh*t" on in here for there beliefs.. If your atheist you get told your worthless and cant think for yourself.. If your catholic your an imbosile, if your christian your part of a scam, scientology in a money wrangling cult.. Whilst different people have different beliefs and have no maturity they will constantly bash on other peoples beliefs.. They obviously dont have enough faith that they need to put down every one elses!

It is politically incorrect to bash religions, but because Christianity is the most common religion in the U.S. most people don't extend it the same level of consideration. Given that there are no qualifications for gaining a yahoo idea, there is no expectation of scholarly discourse. Also consider the anonymous nature of the net, people don't feel the need to be on there best behavior.

Atheists/agnostics get bashed to. It really goes both ways. Judging by a lot of the self righteous posts on this question, I can see why people get upset. Personally I don't "bash" anyone. I do like to get into nice healthy debates though.

On top of being blind, you are a moron.

Every faith is bashed here. Islam is bashed about once a minute on this thing.

Besides Christians are known for being retards and it has always been fun to pick on the slow kid.

Because read in Revelation - we are being torn down, beaten, called names, hurt, destroyed, hated.....the list goes on. The next thing that will happen is that christians will be killed. Remember in the last days - Man will turn on Man and Woman on Woman - Family Member against Family Member. Hatred will run rampant and christians will be completely tested in their faith. We are at the onset of what is to come next.

Hatred first - followed with persecution then death. It is coming, it has already started in Europe.
