Too far... rent the condo in La Jolla to somebody else and get a small apartment around the campus in Westchester.

As everyone has said, it is a 2 hour commute BY MAP! in actual driving time, given Southern Californian traffic conditions and that you would have to take the 405 through some of its most congested areas (John Wayne/ South Coast, Long Beach, South bay loop, airport) the real driving time will be more like 3 hours each way. Two suggestions:
1) Why buy the condo in La Jolla, why not look in Downtown Long Beach, Redondo, etc. all of which are nearer to Loyola Marymount.
2) Why Loyola Marymount? In La Jolla (if that is where your parents want to buy) you would be directly next to U.C. San Diego?
In any case, with the way gas prices are going, with the wear and tear on a car (plus its insurance) with a 6 hour daily commute, and finally the wear and tear on you (will you really be ready to do your best work after such a commute?) you will not have saved much of that $10,000 you plan to save on housing.

Before you end up buying 'shoes that are two sizes too small' simply because they're the only ones available in the style you like.... Understand? You'll buy a condo in an area you're not interested in living in only because that's where the available condo happens to be. This shouldn't be happening in 2006.
Kid tell your folks to look for a foreclosure in the area you're interested in. I can bet you right now that there's someone with a foreclosed property who'd gladly take $50 thousand for a luxury condo that he/she is about to lose. Look through the property listings and contact a few owners of foreclosed properties.
Save your parents the money for their retirement at the same time that they make a good investment. Plus you'll be helping the other guy walk out of the property with some cash in hand.
And you might want to look at real estate as a major in that college you prefer. Good luck.

well its a long commute if you going to have classes everyday, la jolla is a very nice upscale community, i mean your parents bought the condo for investment purposes but they could have bought in santa monica, westwood, or brentwood which are about 45 minutes from loyola, especially with gas prices so high (3.25 for reg.)

Way too far. Keep looking in the LA area. Or, check out UC San Diego, which is nearby, University of San Diego, or Point Loma Nazarene college. Wherever you go, you should spend at least your freshman year on campus to get the full college experience.

You'd have a 2 hour commute on busy days. MapQuest the addresses to verify.

If you live in La Jolla, why not go to UCSD or CSU SanDiego?
With traffic, your commute is 4hrs.

Not unless you want a 118 mile commute every day.
