To darken any color, you add the opposite color, that would be green for darkening red.

Has anyone here actually USED oil paint??? The answer is a touch of the opposite colour, but in a darker tone.
So, if you are using a deep red at the moment (say, Crimson Alizarin or deep Cadmium), add a touch of dark Phthalo or Prussian green.
Also, you don't have to get mix the colours right on your palette. Just fold them together before applying for a more dramatic rendition.

If you are working with oil, acrylic or watercolor try either Indian red, burnt sienna or Carmine. Purple also works but be careful, same with blues but be even more careful.
Avoid non-transparent colors (they usually have a bit of white in them and will make your mix matt, ask for advice on each particular color at your art supplier's counter).
NEVER use black (it makes it darker but muddles the color)
always mix the darker color into the lighter bit by bit, this way you are more aware of the changes and it gives you a higher degree of control.

It is pretty much impossible to make red from other colors since red is a primary color. The only fix is to go out and buy some red.

You don't make red (unless you go and find some red pigment, and grind it up). It's a primary colour.
Ideally you'd mix magenta, (if you don't know, it's similar to a purple red hue). Failing that mix purple. As a last resort navy dark blue, or black.

Add black to make deeper. You can't make red as others have noted - it's a primary.
