and if there is, why? I've heard from lots of people about it, and some even cite an instance where the Puerto Rican reggaeton star, Daddy Yankee, burned a Mexican flag in a video. What's going on?

35 Entertainment, Doesn't "mono por mono, diente por diente" mean " monkey for monkey, tooth for tooth"? (I have a basic understanding of spanish) Wouldn't ojo para ojo or even mano por mano made more sense?

Well dady Yankee is half Cuban so it could be because of the dispute between Fox and Castro last year.

But to tell you the truth, Latin Americans in the U.S. have a lot of beef with each other because were different nationalities. Its pretty stupid if you ask me. Being away from home, it seems they feel they have to show their pride for their country and in the process put down others.

Puerto Ricans from the island are intrigued with the mexican culture from what I hear and vice versa. But in the states we make fun of each other. Jokingly of course. But some take it a little over board. i.e. Daddy Yankee

First, Daddy Yankee did not burn a Mexican flag. It was a rumor. DY is all about uniting ALL Latinos. Plus, Daddy Yankee still continues to have a strong Mexican and Mexican-American fan base. Second, I don't think there's a rift between Puerto Ricans & Mexicans. I mean some may not like each other for some reason or another, but that doesn't mean that the two groups as a whole have a rift between them.

For the saying that someone had wrote in a comment, isn't it "mano por mano" and not "mono por mono"? I've studied Spanish only a few years, but I think "mano por mano" would make more sense, too.

Yes, In New York some distant siblings of mine in East Harlem to be exact, They're one of the many Puerto Ricans that jump Mexicans . (jump is assault and beat up) This was in YEAR 1998 and it goes on all over the East Coast. But Mexicans will retaliate.

So like our homie Hammurabi would say - "Mono por Mono,Diente por Diente" --TRANSLATION-- Eye for Eye Tooth for Tooth.

Hey, I'm Puerto Rican and Mexican 50/50. If there is a rift, Im going to be fighting myself. That what you say about Daddy Yankee, man I feel sorry for him if he did that.

Some say there is. Some claim it started with boxing championships. But, really I think it is just a generalization. Both Puerto Ricans and Mexicans have proven to be courageous and have "corazón" when it comes to getting what they want. About Daddy Yankee, which video is it? I haven't seen such thing.

There is somewhat, but I think it gets exaggerated more than anything. Mexicans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, etc....they are all proud of their country's and heritage and can get annoyed when someone confuses them. It also can annoy them to refer to them all as simply "Mexicans", as some poeple do. With immigration debates going on, Puerto Ricans take offense to be told to "go home to Mexico", when in fact they are American citizens.

Yes there is a rift, but its greatly exagerrated (usually for the purpose of selling records, as you saw).

I am Mexican and I don't know anything about it. I still love my Boricua brothers... and specially my Boricua ladies.

It would be rather dumb of Yankee doing such a thing because he will be alienating a lot of his fan base.
