Oh dear. If I had the answer to that one, I'd be so happy. Everytime I open the door, my baby runs right out. I had to learn blocking techniques to keep him from doing it.
Here is what someone I know did--spray him w/ water. It is cruel, but if u keep doing it, it should break him of the habit. I just can't bear to be so mean, though.

No matter what, ur cat will have the urge to go outside. Here are some tips.
1. Make the inside of ur house interesting by buying a cat tree with some toys hanging or attached to it.
2. Build a very tall fence with a lush backyard enclosure. Fence should be tall with tiny mesh holes in it, tinier than the cat's ear.
3. When taking it outside, have it on a leash. I know it's silly, but it always works.
*Tip: If u make your cat an indoor cat always, it will always stay indoors forever.

It's the lure of the forbidden. If he's trying to sneak out every time you open the door, you need to restrict him. Just pushing him back when you open the door won't do. He'll just work harder at darting past you. You need to crate him to keep him away from the door when it's going to be open and closing (hope you don't live in a really active household!) and stop this habit he's forming. Or close him up in an inside room. Remove him from temptation. That way when he's out, he'll have a new respect for his household freedom.
You may also want to have someone wait outside the door and spray water at cat level when you open the door. Or be there with thier dog if your cat fears dogs. Throw down snap-its when you open the door. Convince him outside is going to be very unpleasant.

Is your cat neutered? It will help in keeping his wandering instincts down. He is constantly looking for a female to mate with, so if there are any in the area, he'll smell them and want to go after them.
If he is neutered, the only thing I can say is try to train him to stay away from the door. Put something like foil (they don't like the texture) in front of the door. Or spray some citrus stuff there (they don't like the smell of citrus).
My two kittens are the same way, but it's because the woman who had them before let them wander outside all the time. Poor babies were flea infested and extremely dirty. :( And she was feeding them ADULT cat food instead of kitten food... /rant

why can't he go outside? Maybe try taking him out on a leash(like a dog and let him walk around in the yard a bit. If you don't have a yard, take him to a park. My cat used to love going outside. You could also try getting some potted plants or catnip. Maybe he just wants to eat the grass.

It's natural for dogs and cats to want to be outside I once saw this cat on a leash so maybe you could take your cat for walks and that way it can go outside but it wont run off.

1. Neuter him.
If that doesn't work,
2. Get a companion cat for him.

You can buy these pretty plants that repel kitties. Your kitty will smell them outside the door and stay inside. It worked for me!

Don't ever let him out. Once he gets a taste of the great outdoors, it might be hard to keep him inside.

Keep him amused, and interested in the house, by using plenty of toys, catnip, food, etc.
