From working with preschoolers I can tel ll you it's just something they do. Sometimes if the child's lead count is slightly elevated they tend to chew on everything. If not just keep reinforcing to her that she should not put things in her mouth because it could make her sick. They eventually grow out of it.

I think hot sauce is abusive and cruel. There are other things available at the drugstore that just taste nasty but won't actually cause pain.

Four years old is awfully old to be putting everything in her mouth. Does she have any developmental delays that would explain why she still does this? If not, does she do it as a way of "getting" to you? If you freak out each time she does this, it might have become fun for her. What kinds of things does she put in her mouth? Is it everything or just sometimes? If you think she is doing this to get to you, try ignoring her unless it is dangerous. If you think she just wants to use her mouth to learn about it, try making her hold your hand and follow you around or wear gloves or mittens. Tell her since she can't follow your instructions, you will have to find a way to help her remember. If she has to spend time with you doing things she doesn't want to do and not playing or watching tv, whatever she likes to do, she will probably agree to stop.

I would kind of be worried about what your child is putting in her mouth? If it's food, I am guessing she's very hungry. If they are unsafe objects, I would probably talk to the pediatrician just to rule out any other concerns (eg. health, sensory issues, etc). Maybe having something in her mouth soothes your daughter when she's upset, sad, etc...maybe you can give her something else to put in her mouth when she's feelings any type of feeling (e.g. bored, frustrated, curious, happy, etc)? Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Well that was natural when your 4 year old was a baby but now it's time to let your kid know not to put things in your mouth. You can just take it out of your kid's mouth y'know.

put a little vinegar on her tongue and tell her what it is so that she makes the connection. The next time she tries to put something in her mouth say it has vinegar on it and she'll remember that bad taste

I know that when children have trouble with sucking their thumbs, some parents put a drop of hot sauce on the thumb.

Remind her not to and impose a consequence when she does. She is not teething and is old enough to know better.
