Probably because they are used to being condemned by much of society, and they often assume, if you start to question their lifestyle, that you are going to do the same. Even apart from that, though, I think anyone would be offended if you challenged their lifestyle or acted like you had a right to judge them. Why should you challenge anyone on their "lifestyle" simply because yours is different.
If you truly mean not to offend and are just curious about them, perhaps you should question them (ie "how do you feel about...?" or "how is......different for you?") rather than challenging them or acting like there is something wrong with them. Anyone would be offended by the latter, gay or not.

That goes without saying for tons of ppl. Like why do black ppl go on the offensive about racist jokes? Whey do hispanics go on the offensive for being called a ****? Why do some white ppl from the south get offended if you call rednecks? Its all because you are challenging who someone is and no one likes that. it's not the challenge....it's not even the mis-understandings between the two 'sexuals'....it's how the argument is presented and the words used and the names we get called. would be like us calling Christians (which I also am) 'crazy zealots' that never read past the Old Testament. you know the fire and brimstone God, but not the God that preaches LOVE.....that's it....LOVE. love for one another and all religions. i knew i was gay when i was four years old. i am now 39 and have never been with a man. i am God fearing and i know that God loves me and would not create me just to condemn me to a hell already full of people who commit real crimes. not just the crimes that some believe are against nature.
