Rottweilers are naturally stronger because of their size, weight and purpose of breeding which is as a natural guard dog. Pitbull terriers are shorter, weigh less but have a firmer sustained grip. However, when comparing bites of each breed, you have to remember, Rottweilers were breed to be guard dogs and bit hard with more than once strike. If you've ever seen one attack, they bite more than once and with each bite, does a head shake designed to unbalance their prey or target. Pitbulls were breed as family dogs originally with emphasis on being good with children. Their bite is of a more sustained bite. Meaning, they bite and hold on for "dear life". As a natural protector, the Rottweiler is stronger and more loyal to its owner and family regardless of how many people it socializes with. Pitbulls are more loving towards strangers when not trained or raised to be untrusting but are still loyal to their owners. If you want a guard dog for property and personal protection, go with the Rott. For family dog, go with the Bull. IF you want it as a "one man dog", i'm gonna personally say go with the rott. They are easier to train in protection work and believe it or not, smarter and quicker learners.

Some of these answers are wrong, wrong, wrong.
A study was done comparing the strength of the bite of a rottie, pit, and german shepherd dog. Results were that the rottie had the strongest bite overall, gsd came in second, and the pit last.
HOWEVER, if these dogs were to fight (and I do hope this never happens), generally speaking (don't forget there are individual differences), pit bulls were bred for gameness and would be unwilling to quit. Other breeds were bred to be "protective" and defensive, while a pit was bred to kill and be intolerable to pain. So even though a german shepherd or rottie have the stronger bites overall, they would be reluctant to kill, unlike the pit bull. So the pit bull would most likely win. But this is a GENERAL assumption. Every dog is different. They are individuals. There are small rotties and big pits.
The idiots who still do dog fights (it is very illegal and just plain wrong!) dont actually use a lot of purebred pits I believe. A lot of times, again generally speaking, they tend to "mix" the dog breeds that are known for strength and muscle.
Now, in terms of sheer mass, the english mastiff is the most massive, weighing up to 220lbs!
But really though, it doesn't matter who is stronger, because you can send a rottie and pit bull out at each other and have different results each time. Each of these breeds doesn't deserve that though. They deserve to be treated well in the home and loved. They are WONDERFUL dogs. And pits are not human aggressive as so many ill-knowledged people out there think, they can be dog aggressive though, as this is what they were bred for back in the day.

Firstly addressing whomever said pitbulls have stronger jaws... It is a common misconception that pibulls have stronger jaws than other dogs but it is actually the truth that pitbulls have the SAME average jaw strength as other breeds of dogs the same size. The stronger jaws myth is propogated by those who fear pitbulls. It is no more true that their jaws "lock" or that they have laser beam eyes.
Secondly, WHAT KIND of "pitbull" are you referring to? The term "pitbull" is commonly and loosely applied to SEVERAL different breeds of dog, most commonly the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
American Pit Bull Terriers hold the world record in several weight classes for the sport of Weight Pulling. I've never heard of a Rottweiler winning a Weight Pulling competition. I would have to say that for their weight an American Pit Bull Terrier is the stronger dog of the two.

How many Rottweilers do you see in weight pulling competitions? Head to head, a Rott would tire easier and would quit sooner. Pound for pound, an APBT is the strongest dog in the world. The breed will give its all in any task to be performed. The most titled dog in history was Bandog Dread an APBT , owned by Diane Jessup. Her book, The Working Pit Bull is a good look for those that think negative of this ultimate breed.

I had a pitbull and it was the nicest dog I ever had. Never had a rottweiler but my friend loves them. She said they are nice and when she gave her dog away it ran back to her house.

Rottweilers were bred to pull carts and protect castles...pits were bred to herd cattle. So the Rottweiler has more over all strength.
