First off, dogs do NOT have 'periods', they must mustus, or in slang, heat cycles; it varies for breeds, sizes, her mothers first heat, and her own internal clock, she is only 8 months, dont be in a hurry for her; Lord knows she sure isnt! Dogs can take up to 2 yrs for a first heat cyle, thus setting the start key of a 'cyle', hats why its called a cycle. Cats go much quicker and that may be where you heard of an earier on set.

Is it possible she was spayed when you got her? You don't say how old she was when she came to you, so maybe that's it. Otherwise, I don't know.

But I hope you're not trying to breed her. There are so many unwanted puppies out there, it's really kind of selfish to continue to intentionally bring more puppies into the world because someone's decided they're more "desirable looking" than a mutt. Think about it!

Small breeds have there first heat before there first birthday, and it only happens twice a year. Your may be to young still. If she has not had her first heat before she is a year in half she should be checked out by your vet.

Take her to the vet see if she's healthy. Get her spayed before you have more dogs running around. You don't seem to know much about dogs to begin with so more would probably not be a good idea.

We breed basset hounds and I just wanted to let you know, from my experience you never want to let her come in contact (for breeding purposes) until at least her 2nd heat has come and gone. I personally would wait till she is at least 2 years old, and then start worrying about all that.

It can happen any time from 6 months on. They are just like humans they don't all start at the same time. If your concerned ask your vet.
