My child has just turned 3 years old and the doctors said that he is gifted yet has a mild version of OCD.. My question is he only gets REALLY bad when my husband is deployed..and seems to ease off when he is home. Can OCD be "seasonal"? Do any of you have experience with this? Does OCD ever go away?

OCD is an anxiety disorder. When your child is with his father he feels less anxiety, so the symptoms will be lessened. As long as you do your best to be especially comforting to him while your husband is away, he should end up just dandy. As for whether OCD ever goes away, that's up for debate. However, most psychiatrists will tell you that if he learns to manage his anxiety and recognize his triggers, he'll be able to lead an absolutely normal life with little or no medication. Best of luck to you.

I'd look at it in a positive way...

No, OCD never goes away, it's a life-long "illness" of your brain.

Look at it this way:

In ten years, you won't have problems making him do homework or clean his room...men/women with OCD are very well-kept and hard-working...

I dont even look at it as an Illness. It is a gift from GOD!

By the way, I have OCD. That's where I have gotten all of my knowledge on it.

And don't worry about your son's uneasiness when Daddy's deployed...Thats pretty common in all children, your child just might have more of a connection with his father than most, thus, showing more affection for him when he's gone and when he's home.

i have ocd and no it doesnt go away but if the child can, counseling can help him. learn what he is compulsive about and be very understanding. ocd can be related to anxiety and probably has something to do with the father being gone. good luck.

ok the key word here is mild....get some books on the subject and do some research. Also, get a good therapist for your child. There are play therapists and psychologists who work with kids that young. If anything, they will give you more specifics on how to handle this gifted and challenged child. Good luck! It could be worse...like OD (oppositionally defiant.....ahhhhhh!!!)

If he is "worse" when Dad's away its probably for attention nothing more. This is overdiagnosed like ADHD
At 3 yrs I wouldn't put alot of concern into it.

maybe it has to do with dad being away, never really seen or heard of it in a 3 year old, he is still impressionable so work with him and see what happens
