Seriously, I live in this world and most of the time it is ok. But sometimes I think the Amish or the Hutterites have the right idea. All following the same faith, the same laws, and living in community. Away from bad influences and negative situations. I think that they probably live more peaceful lives. I can't join them and I don't suscribe to their faith but I do admire them.

I am not saying I agree with all of their lives. I too understand about the need to set an example. The Mennonites here actually do many volunteer and charity type activities.. I only meant that sometimes it seems tempting.

Relax Fred I wasn't stating that I want to be like them or that I agree with their faith. Only that sometimes I envy their peace.

Sure do once and while, don't know every facet of their lifestyle but it sure seems less complicated than we make ours sometimes!

I know some people who have left Amish communities. It isn't nearly as great as you think. They have the same problems there that we have out here. Families shunning each other over trivialities (three buttons vs two buttons on a coat, metal vs rubber rims on buggy tires, etc.). Sexual abuse -- as it happens, lots of that, and they usually just send the offender to live (and prey) somewhere else in another community. Trust me, the grass isn't greener.

As far as the Hutterites go: I saw a documentary about them in which young people were lamenting how the community decides everything for them, how they have no freedom even to choose their own vocation, how they would like to leave, but after all, if they stay, they're guaranteed a living without too much struggle. Sounds pretty bad to me, all round.

Dear Friend: PLEASE do some research on your statement. I, too, yearn for peace in the world, but using the Amish, in particular, as an example as having the "right idea" is a complete misrepresentation! The Amish in some areas of Ohio and Indiana, in particular, are mean spirited, thieves (of each other's contemporary equipment that they wish to hide from the populace), and do their "dirty work at night." I don't mean to sound harsh, but check it out for yourself. Fred

Well they don't suffer the danger of blowing themselves to hell with nuclear weapons at least. We can cure most diseases, but we can also kill many times the number we can cure with the push of a button. The time of the warrior is gone, replaced by a time that a kid can pick up his fathers gun and shoot himself or someone else. We have deadlier weapons and better medicine but the weapons pose such a threat to their wielders that it could end all life on earth.

But they are not living up to Jesus' command to go therefor and preach this good news of the kingdom, in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. They keep to themselves and do not preach to others.

no
because they are ignoring the prime commandment of the Christ.
To go therefore and make disciples.Mt28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you. And, look! I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”

i second that. i lived in rural pa for a bit and knew quite a few amish. they're so removed from all the manure that complicates our lives but they still talked to me and ribbed me without getting all sanctimonious on me. the ones i've met practice what they preach, work harder than anyone i've ever seen, and manage to keep a sense of humor along with their sense of humility...all traits as admirable as they are rare.

I used to envy them too until I read a series of novels written by a woman who had been raised in that type of community. I don't think it is what we might have imagined it to be.
