He is about 3-4 months old, plump belly but scrawny legs and neck. The chow mix bag doesnt tell me how much to feed him so i give him 2-3 cups a day. He could definitely eat more, it seems he is always hungry. I can't tell if he is getting too fat because of his belly or not being fed enough because his other feature dont show any fat.

To determine how much to feed, you have to go by weight. One sign that you are feeding a low quality food is that the company hasn't printed a feeding guideline on the bag. You should NOT feed low quality foods like Puppy Chow, Iams, Science Diet, Purina, Pedigree, Eukanuba, etc. These foods all contain horrible fillers and by-products (ingredients not fit for human consumption).

If you are feeding one of these low quality foods the 2-3 cups is probably appropriate. The reason your dog is so hungary is because it is a low quality food filled with empty calories and fat. There are no substantial ingredients that are going to "fill" your puppy up.

You need to feed a high quality food like Innova, Solid Gold, Wellness, Fromm, Canidae, etc. These foods are more nutritient dense, healthier, and will satisfy your dogs hunger. You also need to feed puppys small meals frequently during the day. I would recommend starting at about 4 meals a day and wean down to about 2 when he reaches adult (about 1 year).

If your dog continues to be "hungary" you can give him pumpkin (plain, not the pie filling) because it is really high in vitamins and minerals but low in claories....and it fills them up!

The message that you need to understand is that low quality foods are just empty calories. If you want to satisfy your dog without feeding more, then you NEED to switch to a better food.

Good luck.

Puppies always seem hungry, but only give him what the bag says. Also make sure he gets regular visits to the vet. The vet will monitor his weight.

In addition, feed him twice or three times a day instead of once (in other words, instead of 3 cups a day, 1 cup three times a day etc...). Puppies sometimes throw up stomach acid if they get too hungry.

2-3 cups is way too much for a puppy. Check the recommended amount for a dog that weight on the bag of dog food you have and feed him that much. I would guess 1-1.5 cups a day, max.

Have him tested for WORMS... a large pot belly...always eating and hungry...could be worms!
After that: look on some websites for pets, they give good advice... here is a link for your sized puppy with a chart on how much to feed him:

It depends on how much it weighs. 1/2 per 3 pound.

Read directions on the bag or ask your Vet, you can call the Vets office for these kind of things!
