On average, what percentage of people actually make it flying militay jets to people who wash out. Like, 5 out of 10 or like 10 out of 1,000?

I am a military flight instructor. Actually, the challenge is simply getting into what the military calls "Undergraduate Pilot Training" (UPT). Once you are a student in UPT the washout rate has decreased down to about 5%. It used to be somewhat higher than this when the Introduction to Flying Training program didn't exist after the T-3 Firefly was grounded.

To get into UPT you have to become an officer. There are three ways to become an officer, an Academy, ROTC, or OCS. But even if you are accepted into officer training, that certainly doesn't guarantee that you will be accepted into UPT. The exception to this is OCS. You can apply for OCS and have a guaranteed pilot slot before you begin. But in order to qualify for OCS you have to have a four year bachelor's degree and they either prefer experience in your field of study, or an advanced degree.

IM me and I can further elaborate on all of this.

Would you believe that in WWll the wash out rate was around 80 to 85 % for college students trying to be Army Air Corps.
