Kaytee. (I have a sun conure, a caique, and a budgie)
The budgie food is Nature's Gold. But I have heard lots of good things about Zupreem bird food.

There's a few places online where you can find lots of different kinds. Try:

Be wary on your search for a cheap bird. Many birds that are cheap or free come with issues and problems attatched. The bird that seems nice the first time you meet it can turn into a screaming monster that drives you nuts.

Maybe you should try to adopt a bird.
http://www.petfinder.com lists some.

Many small birds are relatively cheap though. Are you interested in a budgie (most people refer to them as parakeets), a lovebird, a cockatiel, or even a finch? These birds are all relatively inexpensive, but they all come with care fees attatched so make sure you can care for them for however long they will live.

Good luck

The cheapest bird food ever is the same stuff you eat ^.^ . Bread, pasta, veggies, rice, eggs, tuna - they'll eat most of it. No avocado, no caffeine, and NO chocolate. All that's toxic to birds. If you're looking for something that you can get at the pet store, I buy the pet store's brand of bird food. Sometimes they buy in bulk and bag their own stuff. That's usually 2-3 dollars cheaper than what's sold by other places. Just make sure their turn over rate is high. If the same package has been sitting there for 6 months, it's not very good for your birds. If that's not available, I buy Hagen. They're usually decently priced. Zupreem is good for pellets. And if you're in an absolute pinch and need food for a day or two before the cheque comes in, buy wild bird seed. It won't kill them, but it's pretty cruddy quality. I don't recommend it for anything longer than a few days.

Pizza and beer :-P

Really, in the mornings they eat Kashi whole grain organic cereal (sometimes with soymilk on it if they happen to get into MY bowl) or eggs.

People food is NOT nutritionally complete, but I'm an organic health nut and the breakfast routine has been going on for so long (since I had Boo) that I couldn't imagine eating very many breakfasts for long with OUT a cockatoo :-)

Zupreem generally is very affordable and on the cheap side for pellets. I've seen it sold in bulk at animal food stores (right next to the parakeet seed). There's several sizes, and I've seen it as small as cockatiel morsels.

If you are looking for the most economical bird seed mix, you should mix your own. That's what I do.

You can find a feed mill and buy the individual seeds from them -- Striped Sunflower, Safflower, Oat Groats, White Millet and Red Millet -- those are the top 5. You can also use Hemp, Canary, Cracked Corn, Pumpkin Seed, Spinach Flakes, and more!

When you buy them in 50 # bags, they are pretty reasonable. I mix seed for around 100 birds, and the cost averages for me $10/50 lbs. These are also the freshest seeds you can buy, since they are coming from a feed mill, and our feed mill is the main distributor so theirs is as fresh as it gets!

I then add their fresh foods to that.

I would NOT feed Kaytee because of their horrible reputation for bugs.

I have 2 parrots and 2 cockatiels, the one parrot eats *Pretty Bird* pellets, he doesnt care for the zupreem, the other likes his seed, they both eat whatever we do and love it..of course not the toxic things as chocolate etc.
The tiels also eat seed and seem to do well with it along with vitamins.
Check your local pet store for a bird in your price range, it varies with the type of bird you want

it really depends on what kind of bird. I have a Parrot that besides parrot food eats anything we do except chocolate . He loves rice eggs potatos and really anything we are having. I give him a lot of fruit too and plenty of water. If he knows im fixing food he bangs on his bowl so I know hes ready. You can buy wild food, parakeet or just simple sunflower seeds. Birds love seeds.
