My advice is to speak to a lawyer and the best, most inexpensive way to do this is through Pre-Paid Legal Services. For more information visit the website below, and feel free to contact me through that site if you have further questions on how this service may be able to help you. I encourage you to find out what your rights and options are in this situation.

I wish you the best of luck.

You have to go though a court. Most states require publishing the change in a major paper before it becomes official. This gives anyone with a legitimate objection a chance to speak up. As long as you are not trying to avoid debt or commit some form of fraud, its basically a formality.

An official name change can only be granted by a judge. I suggest you contact your local clerk of the court and ask if they have any forms for a pro se application to change your name. If not, then you should contact an attorney for assistance. Its a pretty basic process, so don't let a lawyer tell you its an expensive or lengthy ordeal.

Good luck
