The roman catholic church has a deeply disturbing history of corruption, brutality, cruelty, greed and abuse. Although the first priests, ie rabbis were family men, and later the followers of christ were encouraged to marry, the catholic church was losing its horde of money and property to the children of priests so decided it would be financially securer to prohibit marriage. They also hated women who they believed were the reason for the expulsion from Eden, and that if a holy man had relations then he was cohorting with the enemy.
I know things have supposed to have changed, but i dont believe it.

Priests take a vow of celebacy to imitate Christ. Nowhere in the bible does it say that Christ ever had sexual relations. So therefore that is why they cannot marry or have sexual relations. They choose to follow Christ's example. As for the reason they encourage marriage and having children-- not everyone is cut out to remain celebate for their entire lives. The bible says we should only have sex inside of marriage. The true purpose for sex is to propagate. Therefore, priests encourage marriage for the purpose of having children. Priests do know what family life is. After all, they have parents and siblings too. You don't need to be married or have children to know what family life is. You posed a very good question.

No where in the Bible does it teach that priests are not to marry. So i believe this is something that the Catholic church has instituted on its own outside of the Bible.

When God gave Eve to Adam she said it's not good for a man to be alone.

While Paul does make the point that as a single person you can do more ministry wise-- we see in the books of 1 and 2 Timothy (addressed specifically to Timothy on how to conduct himself in ministry) that he says be a one woman man, raise a Godly family, etc. (rough paraphrase).

i think your observations are profound and you make a great point. Personally i'm a youth pastor and really looking forward to getting married in the near future...

Priests are "married" to the body of christ which is the church> a true Priest must be able to devot 100% of his time, energy, etc. to God, if he had a family, it would be harder to remain focused>

For one thing, if priests can't marry, then they can't have legitimate heirs and thus Church property isn't sucked into private hands--but all that was more of a concern under feudalism.
