there have been so many tipping questions on this site, that i can tell you to disregard most of the answers without even reading them.

tipping is simple once you know a couple of basic rules. (1.) never tip the owner of any business. tips are for service employees only. (2.) tip well to gain favor from the service employees in case you return to the same place again. (3.) if you are fairly certain you will never return, then leave 15%, and only in the U.S., where tipping has become part of the wages for service people. in other countries, tipping is either discouraged, or optional.

those three rules cover both your questions, and any others. you should print them on a card and sell the card. i'll invest in your company.

I feel if it is a "regular" take out counter, then there probably is no reason for it. HOWEVER: More often than not, when you go to a restaurant to pick up your take out, it has been packed and inspected by someone who is already busy taking care of their own tables or tending bar. This is because most places do not hire someone to do takeout fulltime. In addition to this, in many places the server or bartender who took your order over the phone is also the person who entered your order in the computer. These tipped employees must claim a certain percentage of their sales as tips whether they receive it or not.

The next time you get home or back to the office and your order is all there and in good shape, remember it was because someone most likely took a minute aside from their other activities and made sure your lunch was a good experience much as they would have if you had been at their bar or one of their tables. I say if you can't afford a couple of dollars, go through a drive through. Food service workers work very hard for their money and contrary to popular belief, many of them are well educated and working towards a better career, or have other jobs and are trying to make ends meet.

Sushi places you tip the chef for the food. In fact, etiquette in sushi bars dictates that you order directly from the chef. You tip you waiter for any drinks.

I do leave a tip usually one or two dollars depending on how much I spent.
The place I order from remembers me and is always nice and prompt and lately has begun to give me free iced tea whil I wait-- that was an unexpected surprise- I go there weekly...

I usually leave a dollar or two. They prepare everything and hopefully double check it, so I feel they deserve a small tip. : )
