I'm looking for a used car that will give 4 years or more of economical operation and maintenance. It needs to have 4 doors and a large trunk to carry my camping gear and the 2 large toolboxes I need every day for work. Must have automatic and cold air-conditioning, a smooth and quiet ride. Prefer buckets seats up front with center floor console and a v6 (or v8 even better). $5,000 is the top of what I can afford.

My current 1996 Dodge Intrepid has over 240,000 miles on it's 3.5L v6 and gets an overall average of 24 mpg. A similar car is what I'm looking for - only with far fewer miles on it.

Possible ones to consider:

VW Passat (available with v-6, and in wagon form)

Dodge Intrepid

Subaru Forrester or Legacy Wagon

Based on what you described, a wagon might be a really good choice. I'd stay away from the Ford Taurus (transmission issues) and anything by Chevy (interior trim was very cheap).

Other cars and minivans may work, but based on what you described, I think the cars listed above would be good fits.

You should stay with the dodge, I had the cirrus and it lasted for years. I have the Oldsmobile Intrigue now and it is doing a wonderful job, I am a traveler.

You know I would go with a nice jeep. My dad has a jeep and he's had it for a little more than 12 years and it's still running.

I'd recommend Toyota Corolla. It has great fuel efficiency, it is extremely durable and it has never failed anybody that I know.
