On dates, (especially 1st dates) people are so nervous, and focused on making a good impression and hoping the other person will like them. Some times this makes people play a different role than the role of their true selves. Once the couple warms up to eachother, they willl usually open up and be free to show their inner self.

I guess people are worried that the person won't like them for who they really are. Sometimes you go on a date with someone that you feel comfortable showing your inner self with on the first date. That's usually if you know quite a bit about them before the date though.

After how many dates? Clearly on the first few, we're trying lay some groundwork for a friendship. You can't just spill everything too soon. It's overwhelming to be that intimate that quickly.
