Matt:
I understand the truth of your answer. Yet fear of God as I know it is profound reverence, not dread of punishment. Gratitude is my first answer. Then I realized that the gratitude comes from knowing God. The more realistic my understanding of Him, the more my natural response is gratefulness.

Receiving God's love.

Bible tells us that we love because he first loved us.

It also says whoever is forgiven much loves much.

So the more personally and deeply we understand God's love for us, the more we obey Him. Obedience in the Bible is closely tied to love for God. So the more we know, love God the more we obey.

Some practical things:

1) Draw close to God. (Prayer, Bible Study)...
2) Surround yourself with those who love God.
3) Study the characer of God.

God Bless...

fear. i have no religon that i belong to exclusively however i pull from many far east and buddhism sects as a model to live by . when you add a god in the equation as gov'ts did so long ago its another way for them to hold society under there thumb. allowing a 2nd set of rules supposedly more important than the states, due to the penalties that religous ones possess( i.e. eternal damnation) .

Understanding our heavenly Father as being a loving Spirit. That he is out for our good all the time and wants to protect us and for us to love him in return. That is what makes me want to be obedient.
