To quote Forrest Gump "stupid is as stupid does." Ignorance, unfortunately, is the key to any type of prejudicial behavior - and parents are often the ones who teach their children these types of behaviors; just like prejudice amongst races, they just haven't chosen to thoughtfully "walk in another's shoes" before passing judgement. I'm a school nurse in a relatively small, rural community; there are no "special schools" for "special needs" kids in our area. Therefore, we have a "Centers" classroom on each of our four campuses (2 elem., 1 Middle, 1 HS). We have a full-range of special needs children, from wheelchair-bound that function on a 6 mo. old level, and up. This is just superb, imho, because all our kids interact with these special kids on a daily basis, and we have lots of peer aides as well. And, I can tell you, there's lots of laughter and fun, and bonds that form that are just as important to the "special needs" child as it is for the self-esteem of a peer tutor. In fact, I find that the peers who are known to have child abuse/neglect struggles they are dealing with in their own lives, make some incredibly caring, strong mentors to their partner, and go on to desire to work in human service careers. It's a win-win situation. My mom is a foster-mom for severely mentally impaired children and young adults, and she has had ignorant, abusive people stop her in stores and tell her "not to take those monsters out in public." Honestly. But for every one of those kind of selfish, ignorant and scared individuals, there are ten angels lined up advocating for her kids. It is wisdom to walk quietly, and since I'm in AZ, walk in another's moccassins for a mile before ever, ever opening one's mouth. Listening and observing, and taking the time to understand, are some of the most precious, valuable gifts one can give to his or her self. It makes me happy you can't understand the motivation of those who choose poorly; it shows the treasure you are in this world. Way to be!

Thats is because they don't understand them. Human beings are afriad of the unknown. If they don't understand something, they tend to act weird. In short, they need to be educated on the special needs of these children. All children are a precious gift from God and should be treasured.

cuz they're ignorant and don't understand what is wrong with the child if someone just took the time to find out about a condition or about the challenged individual there would be a lot less teasing and ignorance

Because they are immature and insecure about themselves, and feel the need to pick on someone more defenseless than themselves to feel bigger, stronger, better, or smarter than they really are.
