Go for cheerios. They turn to mush and they are great for helping the baby to figure out how to hold things between finger and thumb and negotiate them into the mouth. Other things work, too. Go for the Toddler carrots and green beans. These are basically mush in the solid form and are great for that self feeding thing.
some great suggestions from the doctor: breakfast: pancakes or french toast (cut up, no syrup); yogurt spread on bread; cottage cheese spread on bread; fruit breads cut into strips lunch/dinner:
-protein: meat spreads on bread or toast; cheese in all varieties (shreaded or sliced cheese works best); hamburger patty broken up; cheese melted on bread, deli-style turkey, chicken and bologna, cut-up turkey dogs (skin peeled)
-veggies: peas, carrots, zucchini, broccoli, asparagus tops--all cooked until tender but not mushy; beets; regular and sweet potatoes or yams, baked and cut up or mashed (babies loves to feed themselfs handfuls of mashed potatoes; you can melt cheese over it, too)
starches: pasta in all shapes with different sauces, rice (you can firm it up with some cheese); bread and toast; crackers; potatoes (see above); beans fruit: bananas; soft pears; minced apples; canned fruit (drain off the liquid); strawberries, grapes (skinned and quartered)
Have fun and don't be afraid to experiment. This is a really neat time; you can actually take your baby to restaurants without packing a separate meal!

My 1 1/2 year old loves sweet potato sticks, Just peel a sweet potato, cut it into sticks like french fries, steam and freeze. He likes them frozen(I think it helps because hes cutting his back teeth). But he really loves them. Likes animal crackers, grapes, bananas, anything fruit.

PB & J, grilled cheese, cheerios, grapes, raisins, banana slices, apple chunks, baby carrots (you can steam them first, then stick them in the fridge so that they're softer, but not hot!), regular graham crackers (they divide into smaller rectangles), chicken...whatever you serve, just get creative with how you cut it- kids love different shapes!

Take a can of Campbell's alphabet soup and put it in a strainer. Wash off the broth (and all that SODIUM!) then warm up the soft pasta and veggies for your toddler.
