Once upon a time Mullah Nasruddin was walking along a dusty road in the countryside. In the far distance he could see a group of men. Nasruddin, the Divine Fool that he was, became very worried. First, he worried that the men could be robbers and that they would beat him and rob him of what little he had. Next he worried that they were the Sultan's soldiers and that they would beat him, rob him of what little he had and make him enlist. Looking desperately around for a place to hide, Nasruddin saw a freshly dug, open grave across the road. He hiked up his dervish robes, ran across the road and threw himself into the open grave.
The band of pilgrims, for that is what they truly were, saw this wild-haired dervish jump into the air, run across the road and throw himself into a grave. Surely, they thought, here is a holy man with much to teach us. And they went to the graveside to find out what.
"Mullah" (which means "teacher"), they called down to him, "what are you doing here?"
Nasruddin saw that they were earnest students of life and discerned that this was a teachable moment decided to answer them thusly, "Good sirs, two things: first, just because you ask a simple question does not necessarily mean there is a simple answer. And second, I am here because of you and further, you are here because of me."
