dishes are objects people use from which to eat. Such as a plate is used to place food on top of it so that you don't just eat your food with your hands. cups are made so that you can drink from them whatever beverage you like, etc. if you are a chef (someone who cooks food for a living - Emiril, etc.) a dish is a food (any food) that is made to eat. Such as, "I had the Fish and Chips dish", etc.

Well, dishes could be a few dish. Example :curry, tom yam
Dishes could also mean plates.
