Seriously, a lot of factors come into play. Climate can be the most overlooked. Areas that dont get a lot of sun tend to have larger populations that are depressed. Depression leads to inactivity, staying indoors and sometimes eating as a means of coping with the sadness. The infrastructure of the city plays a big role too. Suburban areas where a car is required even for the most routine task tend to have more overweight people. Economics has a lot to do with it too. Because most cheap food is also very unhealthy, poor people can tend to be heavier than their more affluent counterparts.

I think it has to do with the average attitudes of the area. For example, I used to live in Wisconsin where a lot of people live on farms and eat cheese and drink whole milk. And they drink a lot of beer there. Most don't care about their weight or working out. I moved to California and have noticed that people out here are more concerned both with eating healthier and looking good.

Obviously it's what they eat. Chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes are heart attacks waiting to happen! Some states have that stuff all the time compared to other states which have grilled chicken breasts and steamed veggies. See what I mean?

The midwest is very athletic, cause theres nothing else to do out there in the middle of nowhere. California is all commie hippies who think that 130 pounds at 5'5" is overweight, and everywhere else people are NORMAL, lol..........

Some states are full of shallow people obsessed with outward appearance, plastic boobs, and surgically enhanced noses...and other states are obsessed with pork and nascar. Honestly...I can't decide which is worse...

Frankly...who gives a crap as long as people are happy?

It usually has to do with the weather in those states and the culturally bias cooking in the state you are talking about.

Some of it has to do with ethnic minorities - hispanics and african americans are, on average, heavier than whites, for examples. Diet is another factor - for example, Southern food isn't exactly known for its health benefits.

Laziness and type of diet. Southern states eat more fried foods.

Well this is my theory, people up north seem to be a little larger (from what I've seen) than people down south, and I think it's cuz up north you can cover it up with sweaters and coats and such wheras down here you'll prob die trying to wear those and theres constant pressure to be thin. who knows? more mc donalds?
