Oh my.....one of my favorites. If we love God and listen to the leading of the Holy Spirit, then everything that comes into our lives and goes forth from our lives will be used to work in the will of God. That is such a powerful scripture.
If I could, I would like to share the scripture that I believe in my heart actually "walks along" with that one. It's Ephesians 2.
I know there will be many lines, but they all must sing together! All of our work---all that we do was planned by God already. We just have to accept the work he has for us and trust that "all things will work to the good," even during those times when we wonder, "Lord, did I make the right decision? Am I doing what you want me to do; because, this isn't working out so well, Lord?"
Ephesians 2:4-14
4 Even before the world was made, God chose us for Himself because of His love. He planned that we should be holy and without blame as He sees us. 5 God already planned to have us as His own children. This was done by Jesus Christ. In His plan God wanted this done.
6 We thank God for His lovingfavor to us. He gave this loving-favor to us through His much-loved Son. 7 Because of the blood of Christ, we are bought and made free from the punishment of sin. And because of His blood, our sins are forgiven. His loving-favor to us is so rich. 8 He was so willing to give all of this to us. He did this with wisdom and understanding. 9 God told us the secret of what He wanted to do. It is this: In loving thought He planned long ago to send Christ into the world. 10 The plan was for Christ to gather us all together at the right time. If we are in heaven or still on earth, He will bring us together and will be head over all.
11 We were already chosen to be God's own children by Christ. This was done just like the plan He had. 12 We who were the first to put our trust in Christ should thank Him for His greatness. 13 The truth is the Good News. When you heard the truth, you put your trust in Christ. Then God marked you by giving you His Holy Spirit as a promise. 14 The Holy Spirit was given to us as a promise that we will receive everything God has for us. God's Spirit will be with us until God finishes His work of making us complete. God does this to show His shining-greatness.

Well, when I think of my grandpa I think of how he worked hard his whole life as a sheepherder and bought a lot of land as a sort of investment, but he wasn't as active in going to church for years. Later on he did come back to church and worked for 13 years in the Salt Lake temple in Utah, but during part of that time there were all kinds of lawyers and bankers after the land he had invested in, and sometimes he had to hide or go live in other places until all the litigation was resolved. One time he was physically assaulted by some people who were mad at him, and they left him unconscious in his car, so when he came to he had to drive himself to the hospital. Those people didn't realize it was really the lawyers and bankers' fault that things happened in business the way they did. Another time he was the victim of a check forger who stole his coat and checkbook. And when he died (we think it was aggravated by someone punching him in the face at a nursing home, probably another resident) none of us really had the money for any kind of a real funeral or coffin, since the lawyers had taken everything. But I already know he is happy where he is and serving the Lord, and the Resurrection is not as far away as it used to be, and since my grandpa died faithful he will come forth in the Resurrection and I will see him again.
Thanks for asking this question. We need some more refined questions on this site. That's what I've been doing lately.

I think my faith has helped to look for the good in everything. I have a friend who always said that I was so lucky, that everything went right for me, and then I have a friend who says me and my family must be cursed because of all the bad stuff that happens.
I don't think either is particularly true, but I feel closer to the lucky side because of the big picture, the big perspective, that my faith gives me. I've got a broken arm right now, and while it's hard, I'm happy because now I'm learning to be ambidextrous - and in the long run, that's going to be great.

Everything in our lives, in one way or another, for one person or another is in the hands of God.
We might not see the "good" that God has planned, until well after the fact, but it is always there.

IN His Almighty providence He is able to turn all the events of His children to their good although all their deeds themselves are not all good. When they obey they are rewarded with a reward of grace, when they disobey they are chastened as a father chastens the children he loves, and when evil befalls them He is able to turn it for good as He did when Josephs brothers sold him to slavery but God used it to save His people in Egypt during the famine.
