My advice is to speak to a lawyer and the best, most inexpensive way to do this is through Pre-Paid Legal Services. For more information visit the website below, and feel free to contact me through that site if you have further questions on how this service may be able to help you. I encourage you to find out what your rights and options are in this situation.
I wish you the best of luck.

Personally, I think the magic age is 12 when you can leave them for short periods of time. It's always good to let the neighbors know that you're leaving for a while. When I was 12, I was babysitting already - by 13, I was watching infants.... I know I left my boys at 12 and 10 - but they were very responsible. I also gave them things to do in different rooms to keep them apart...
If it's one child, with cell phones today - I don't think it's a major issue to go grocery shopping. Funny about legality......you can leave a 'legal' age 18 year old alone and they're worse than the 12 year old. I think that the key is being responsible - letting neighbors know - calling them every 15 minutes. Try leaving him for 15 minutes and see what happens.... then 1/2 hour (and call him at 15 minutes) so that you can monitor how he's doing.
Oh, one more thing - as he gets older - you'll want to leave him less..... and NEVER leave kids alone for the weekend - that's really asking for a party at your house and lots of trouble.

Call your local dept of children's services. Although, when my son was 11 and didn't want to go to extended school program and I called ours, (Tennessee) I was told that there was no certain age and that it was up to me to decide if my child was ready. So I asked them "then why do I hear about people leaving their 2 year olds alone and getting arrested? Maybe they thought their child was ready." And they finally told me at age 10, but I honestly don't think they really knew or cared.
I hope you have better luck with your DCS.

All depends on their ages. And if their are mentally fit / responsible enough.
You can always call the Children Protective Services in your area to find out.

there's no legall age when to leave ur kids. they have different mental and emotional development. If u have trained them well earlier, its safer. and dont just leave them. Try to put someone responsible to look after them. If u mean totally leave without supervision, when they cand decide with mature descernment, when they can take care of themselves, i think that's the time u can leave them while ur away

I would say 12 or 13 yrs old, depending on how mature they are. I was babysitting at 12,but my parents were nearby. Make rules and procedures in case of emergencies.
