There's no way to be certain what will or won't hurt his feelings. The best thing to do is take it very slowly and talk about where you are going in life. You might not be able to make a "clean break" over night. Just take your time, explain you feel uneasy with the situation and give him time to respond and get comfortable with the fact that you feel the situation isn't what you want. If you do it outright it will potentially have a far more dangerous outcome than if you do it slowly.
Take your time, prepare what to say and don't make it a definite thing right away. You need to ease him into accepting it will soon be over.
Try it all in person. And continue to talk and spend time with him afterwards to show there is no hard feelings.

It's a good thing that u got ur priorities in order. It's ur senior yr and u should enjoy it. You should tell him how u feel and hear him out. If he's really a good guy u should think it through before u throw ur relationship out the window. Take an evaluation of your relationship and compare the good and bad things and if the good out weighs the bad than u should try 2 work it out but if u honestly don't want him anymore let him know. Your young u will be in plenty relationship. Graduating is or should be important to u. If u know he's not going 2 b helpful than cut him loose this is a hard and stressful time in highschool and u need all the support and u don't need stress and u should tell him that theres nothing wrong wit him and u still wanna b friends.

Tell him the truth. Giving him closure will make it easier for him to move on. Don't give him false hope by giving him a watered down answer, you'll only hurt him even more in the long run. If you truly think he's sweet and want the best for him, you'll help him move on.

No matter what you say, you will hurt his feelings. Might as well be honest about it and get it over with quickly.
Just tell him that you have been thinking, and that you just want to be friends from now on. I wouldn't try to give a long explanation -- that will make it worse.

It doesn't matter how you say it, your boyfriend is going to be hurt. While it may seem that he's going to ignore you or hate you(not really) for awhile he will eventually realize that there are other fishes in the sea. Not all relationships in high school make it.
