There are a few things about getting braces that hurt. First it really hurts when you get spacers put in your teeth before the braces. Your teeth will be sore. Then after having the spacers for a few weeks you will get the braces on. They put this thing in your mouth to hold it open while they glue the brackets on your teeth, it doesn't hurt but it's uncomfortable. When the braces are on it's not that bad. Your teeth will hurt a little until you get used to them. What sucks is that the braces will sometimes cut the inside of your mouth and that hurts. I've had braces for a year and I am used to them now. Overall it's not that bad.

Not really when you get them put on, your mouth might get tired from being open or having to bite down on the suction tube etc., but I think for most ppl the pain comes afterwards. It's a good idea to take a couple Advil (I find it works best) right after you get them put on so the pain isn't so bad later. Everybody's experience is different, so you might not be sore for very long. With my experience I hated the sensation of the brackets scraping the inside of my mouth the most. Your ortho should give you wax or silicone to use for that which works great (silicone works best!). You can also buy it. Plan on eating soft foods for the first few days, some suggestions are scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, well cooked pasta, soup, pudding, ice cream etc. It'll feel weird biting down on things for a while, but it won't feel like that forever!
PS - I don't know where some of these ppl are coming from. When you first get them on, it only hurts for a few days. Your teeth and lips eventually get used to it, even when you go back to get them tightened it only hurts afterwards for a few hours and then you should be fine. It's like building up a resistance or tolerance. I think that's the norm. It's all worth it though! And the sooner you get them, the sooner you'll be outta them!

the first time you get them, it is very uncomfortable and your mouth hurts for nearly a week then the pain goes away. But, it hurts every month when you get them tightened, also for about a week. But, oh man am I glad I got braces, because the results are so rewarding.

The spacers hurt the most. But the braces arent to bad. they just make you mouth sore for about 3 days after you get them on and then when they tighten them again they start getting sore. I got mine on about 2 weeks ago.

My daughter had braces. She said they didn't hurt until it was time to tighten them. It only lasted about an hour and she was able to eat okay.

depends on which kind you get...i got damon braces and they were more sore than pain....the thing that hurt the most i'd sya was him pushing the bracket onto my tooth with glue...that wasn't even bad at all.another thing is having your mouth open soo long gets dry lips...so put on chapstick or lipgloss...whatever.and damon braces don't get tightened-even i don't know why but i know its working.now normal braces i'm not sure but i know it wouldn't be too bad.

Yes it does, for awhile, after you get your teeth tighten and wired. Your gums will be sore for a couple of days, but later you'll get used to it. Ever visit you make to the dental, your teeth will be tighten, and the wires will start rubbing against your inter lips.

yes it hurts, A LOT but it also depends on the orthodontist. If it's a really good one, like top 10 in the country, you won't experience mush pain. Ok one, expect a lot of pain.
