You hear so much about nanotech nowadays. Universities are pumping lots of money into nano research. Is it just a fad or the wave of the future? Are there any good employment opportunities in this area?

You are pretty much using nanotechnology right now while using your computer. The microprocessor inside your comp is an integrated circuit that contains millions of transistors and other elements on a small square. The size of the transistors can be around 250nm to 150nm depending on how old your comp is (smaller transistors means more per chip which leads to better performance capability). The individual parts and interconnections between the transistors are smaller yet. My answer to how this is possible is linked below (the manufacturing processes).

Oh and there was a really cool article in a recent issue of Popular Science about a battery cell the size of a postage stamp that was constructed by coaxing a harmless strain of virus to construct it. Certainly is a neat materials science engineering/electrical engineering application of nanotech.

And in other areas of science/engineering nanotechnology has been tinkered around with for a while. The biological sciences and medical fields seem to be particularly interested in the subject (for example maybe to fight cancer as in article linked below).

So nanotech has been around for a while (in your computer), and new applications are certainly not hype. Employment opportunities can be pretty numerous and the pay can be substantial depending on what area of science or engineering you study in school.

Nanotechnology has applications in several industries. There was a recent announcement by Seagate that their next generation drives will use nanotechnology. They're investing $300m in their efforts and hiring as a result (see article).

There are applications for nanotechnology in semiconductors, genetics / biotechnology, and other fields. You just have to decide which on you want to be in and look at the leading companies. Most, if not all of them are working with nanotech.

quite real man. i'm doing my thesis on it and it is so cool...and kinda complicated i gotta admit. we designed a car glass that cannot at all in anyway get stains. with NANO tech. cool eh?
just pour a glass of water on it. all of it will slip dow the windshield to the very last drop.
now where else do ya think this can be used. im sorry for being rude but it would be so nice if this technology was used in toilets!!!

nobody knows yet

that is the beauty of it

it doesn't really exist yet so the only employment opportunities are in research

this research will eventually answer your question
