My dog Taco is a toy poodle and he is strictly indoors. We only take him out to do his business 8) and that is only if we have him on a leash. If I don't use a leash, would he run away? I know some people who let their dogs go by themselves then they come back when they are done. Another problem I have is he doesn't come when I call him. We are taking PetSmart classes to train him but he just stares at me when I call him to come here. Any comments or suggestions?

COME

walk away from pup about 10 feet to start. say pup's name and "COME" in a happy voice. once pup comes praise it lavishly have a bit of a play and give it a treat.
Gradually increase the distance you walk away. and eventually once pup knows command only treat every 3rd come. tapering off until he comes every time with out treat using only praise.
this will take a few days to learn if you practice every day.

Try him off lead in an enclosed area first..or get him coming when called. Or, use a longer Light line, such as clothes line rope, or strong twine, and see how far he wanders away from you, and if he runs when you try to catch him...

To allow him outside without a leash is very dangerous . All he has to do is see a squirrel, or cat across the street and decide to run into traffic and then you'll wish you had him on the leash . You might want to try a longer leash so that you can sit on the steps and let him feel "free" in the yard . But always use a leash .

Anyone who lets their dog outside (and cat) without a leash or a fenced in yard is an irresponsible owner! Yes you should be worried about your dog running away or worst yet, being hit by a car! Any dog, and I mean ANY dog, even with obedience training has a mind that can think, and if they see something, they can and will go after it. Don't underestimate an animals brain. Even a small dog.

I have 2 Chihuahuas they both came when I call them but when we are walking and I let them of the leash one time the male did not came to me I spent 4 hours looking for him till I found him tired setting under a tree the female came when I called her that’s why I don’t let them of the leash any more, try a long leash first.

You need to keep up with the training. He needs to know his name and that you mean the command. A long contact lead will give him a little freedom and then you can call him back 'HERE' and if he does no respond put the pressure on. Lots of training on the lead so he listens to you and even at home keep up the discipline. Do not let him get away with anything always keep at him till you get the response you want.
Make a fuss and ocaionally a treat when he responds well
Keep at it It's worth while

There's no way to know until you let him off the leash and see what happens. He might run, he might not.

The best thing to try is to take him someplace that's fenced in, but the area is so large he might not be able to see the fence. If he bolts when he's off the leash, you have your answer and you can easily go get him.

I would suggest that you keep doing what you are doing, by taking him to the training classes. Like humans, some dogs take longer to learn than others, so you will need lots of patience. Just keep practising the technique's you are learning at the classes. The classes are training for you - to train the dog, some people think that they will learn it all there, but it is only by training him reguarly (a few times a day), that he will learn. - Good luck!

taco might look for a female. if he is already neutered, he might look for a playmate of his own kind. he needs a place to run. since he is small his running space doesn't need to be very large. do you run with him when you take him out. smaller dogs like to run more, maybe because they are carried more. if you have a dog park take him there. they usually have a small dog side and a large dog side.there the dogs can run or what ever without their leashes on.

IF.. IF you have another dog or dogs, your pet TACO might run away if he feels he is NOT the favorite.. I had a situation like that..

I am always afraid of a dog.. particularly a young dog running away if turned loose.. The other thing you have to worry about if he is unleashed and allowed to go outside by himself..... is that someone might steal it... If it is a pretty little dog... cute... etc.. the chances of it being stolen are high.
