I have a six month old lab/chow mix . . great dog so far. He picked up potty training & 'sitting' pretty easy but I have had a hard time moving onto other things like 'stay' & 'shake hands' . . anybody got any tips for training a dog.. Thanks!

Hold a treat in your closed hand. Your pooch will attempt to nose at it and eventually paw at it. When he paws, tell him shake. Then give him the treat. That's how I got my golden/beagle mix to shake (and high five and roll over and play dead and jump up and catch...you know)

Its all repetition and reward. thats how u train a dog. pick up his paw shake it while saying "shake" then give him a treat. to do this over and over and over again im fond of using Cheerios because you cant keep stuffing your dog with treats lol.

after awhile of doing this withhold the treat if he doesnt lift his paw.. wait a few seconds then take his paw and shake it saying shake then give reward

eventually the dog will catch on that in order to recieve a treat he'll lift his paw. At this time once he starts doing it correctly give him a nice scratch on the ears or pet him saying good dog.. because then he'll begin to understand that the treat is attention, not something to put in his tummy

This is such an easy trick to teach. Especially with that type of a dog. We taught our Jack Russell how to shake hands in 15 minutes. Get her favorite treat. I hope she knows how to sit. Tell her to sit. Then say, "Shake" and grab her hand and shake it, say "GOOD GIRL/BOY!" and give them a treat. Do this for awhile, and they will get it right away.

get a few treats and put them in your pocket. say 'shake hands' and then pick up the dogs paw and shake it. then give him a treat. keep doing this and slowly take away the treats. he will learn over time. good luck!
