Sit down, be calm, and relax. You need to slow your breathing,The more tense you are the faster you'll breathe.

You can check to see if you are beginning to hyperventilate by timing your breathing. Count how many times you breathe in and out for one minute. You may feel your breathing is unnatural and forced while you do this, but this doesn't really effect the result. If you are breathing more than 12 sets of 'in - out' in a minute then you are over-breathing.

To slow your breathing and stop hyperventilating take a breath in (not a deep breath, just a normal breath) and hold it for three seconds. Then breathe out slowly. Concentrate on taking a few more normal breaths slowly (there is no need to try and take deep breaths) and repeat the three second hold every few breaths. Time your breathing again and try to slow your breaths to 12 a minute. Focus on relaxing the muscles in your chest, stomach and shoulders. It might help to mentally repeat the word 'relax' or 'slow' as you breathe out.
