If someone invented an automated computerized high power sniper rifle that could all by itself spot targets, engage and shoot. Equipped with infrared cameras and sensors and a powerful zoom capable of locking on targets as far as 1 mile.

Then he would plant many of those Robosnipers in an area of the city where he wants to commit a crime.

Would you risk your lives fighting against very effective machinery ?

Wouldn't that have a strong impact against your morale ? Because you know those weapons would never tire, never need food and water, never need rest, could not be incapacitated by tear gas or other chemical weapons. Would be very resistant robust so they could only be taken down with Anti-tank charges. They would be compact so as to be as small a target as possible. And they would never miss: One shot, one hit.

They could find weak spots and hit where you are not protected.

So, would you risk your lives to fight cold and calculating hardware ?

Actually, a similar weapon already exists. We are employing that weapon in Iraq. They actually showed that weapon in use back in March of this year.
This demonstrates that fiction can be the wave of our future.

Sworn to uphold the law and protect so yes, I would.

What an....interesting concept. But to follow your sci-fi train of thought let's pick it apart.

1. Power supply can be disrupted. It draws energy from somewhere..major energy. Utilizing mapping tools of wattage use would isolate the source and offer a shutdown option. It has a generator? Those can be taken out as well. Solar source? Reflective, thus locatable thus destroyable. Gas, propane? Well heck, it's its own bomb!

2. Is it making its own ammo? If not, it must have a supply source that would have to be replenished...take out the source, render it an empty robot.

3. Never miss? Eh....but since its not human it can be felled by one or 20 of its own kind. Sacrifice a few modified bomb robots to distract then lock in and destroy.

LOL that was fun but hardware is just that...hardware. Someone is always building the bigger and better mousetrap and someone else is always building its countermeasure.

Yes, I would

Why - Because if the same person who planted the weapons decided to make those weapons target anyone, or anything - then it would cost lives, and the apprehention of a person capable of making such items would be necessarry to potentially save lives of innocent by-standers. Therefore, I would go up against the weapons without hesitation. Besides, the best machine in the world is a well trained person.

The reality of your scenario is that it is not reality. For a machine to possess those characteristics would require one, a large power supply, would be conspicuous and very difficult to maintain and despite your dreaming would have to have human interaction to reload, etc. You couldn't have an endless ammo supply. Someone would have to make an appearance. In other words it is flawed as well. If it is flawed then it can be overtaken. As far as my morale, it would only get stronger and more intense, especially if you are talking about fellow police officers getting gunned down. The killer wouldn't be able to rest!

Yes - there is no difference between an apparatus like that and a cretin making a fake 911 call just ready to ambush me and shoot for my head. Basically see the story of Gerry Carter, NYPD Housing Unit. I showed up third on the scene and escorted Gerry to the hospital where he subsequently passed, he too would obviously answer yes to this question.

Yes, risking lives is what police officers do on a daily basis. Not only do they have to do it, they love to do it. I think any city with such a rediculous problem like that would be evacuated and some advanced unit would come in to handle it.

I would risk my life. I risk my life against raving lunatics everyday. This isnt even a question. I swore to uphold the law at any costs.
