In order for abdominal exercises to be most efficient the spinal column must flex from the top down or the bottom up. Crunches accomplish this and better if done on a stability ball which allows a prestretch in the obliques and rectus abdominis. Situps work primarily the hip flexors (iliopsoas, sartorius, rectus femoris). The abs lock in a static contraction at the start of the motion, then the hip flexors pull the torso through the remainder of the range of motion. Situps can aggravate the lower back in some individuals. Variety is the best when trying to target any body part. Crunches, hanging leg raises, bicycle in the supine position, reverse crunches, oblique crunches, etc. can provide that variety.

The big difference is that crunches are easier on your neck and back. Sit-ups work your hip muscles more than crunches do. Crunches are definitely better.

crunches are done with a half lifting of the torso. You are isolating the abdominal muscle more in this position. Sit-ups are done with the lifting of your entire torso from the floor. You can touch your knees and all. It's more stress on your back than anything else. I like crunches myself

They are basically the same exersise almost, however who ever told you that is right! Chrunches do give you a little bit more tension in your stomach mussle than a sit up would. However crunches hurt your back more than sit ups!

Crunches are more efficient and they don't hurt your back. Sit ups work the lower abs for me. I do them both, but the old fashion situps work more for me because I need more attention in my lower area.

You can't compare a man to a woman. Each is different. But a man, and a woman, complement each other. In other words, one man and one woman (together) is one unit. They are a complementary pair.

I want the Ab Lounge. It works great, but doesn't hurt your back as if you were on the floor.
