If a human believes that only their belief system is right and that they must punish the other humans that don't agree with them then they are not very evolved or enlightened humans are they? Many people will operate in the low base energy all of their lives because they haven't learned their lessons yet.

You have asked a very good question, religion is man made so man thinks he has the right to control others, this has been done over the years in the form of brainwashing people with a story written by man, changed to suit what man wanted.

We don't need religion, we only need faith in God, and ourselves

My religion doesnt give me the right to oppress anyone. "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" leaves no room for oppression. Some could say I oppress myself, by not doing certain things but I dont feel like I oppress myself as much as I feel it is self controll and self respect.

Yes, I think many believers will be shocked as they prepare to go through the Gates of Heaven: they will find their labels being ripped off! I am sure God will be far more interested in what they did and did not do for their fellow men(and women) rather than what tag they hid behind.

Fill your bowl to the brim and it will spill.
Keep sharpening your knife and it will blunt.
Chase after money and security and your heart will never unclench.
Care about other people's approval and you will be their prisoner.
Do your work, then step back. The only path to serenity.

It's because these acts are condoned as the "word of god" in the fictitious religious texts that they follow.
