I love to make coins that look like real ones, such as dimes and quarters. I make the coins out of metal, I DO NOT USE REAL U.S. COINS IN THE PROCESS. It's an art. I enjoy it very much. I display my coins for sale during festivals in my area. It's quite profitable actually. Some of my clients even buy thousands of dollars worth of my coins! Anyway, my friend thinks they are using my coins as cointerfeit money and putting them in coinstars and vending machines. She tried it once to see if it would work and it did (don't go crazy she only used a nickel & didn't take a thing). Selling these coins is my job, so would I go to jail if they caught one of my clients putting my coins in a coinstar machine? keep in mind I DO NOT USE U.S. COINS....Thanks!

I agree with first answer. E-mail the Treasury dept and tell them whats up. They could possibly tell you to change coin somehow to make them not work in machines. Different size, weight something. But they could come and arrest you also.

If you aren't using US coins and you aren't COPYING US coins, you're fine.

There's no law against making artwork that is the same size and shape of a US coin.

Now if you're making them look exactly like US coins, two things: 1) you're very talented 2) this is probably illegal.

And a comment on another answer up there: I would totally buy a purple coin.

if you make a coin that looks like the real one... then it is counterfeiting...

you must be selling them really cheap if people are using them in coinstar machines!...

I know of a man that makes paper money... it looks real... but is totally different from the real money... and he sells it as artwork... or in bartering... asking the store clerk if they will accept it as payment for the items being purchased... plus give some money back... he has never been arrested... the people in the store usually put it in a frame and display it... they are really beautifully done.. in many colors.

personally, i wouldn't take the chance by making them look like real ones, but instead try making them on a color that everyone knows isn't real, like purple or green

hope it works out!

Yep!

You tread on very dangerous ground.

Visit any FBI office and ask them if its OK if you do the above..........................then DUCK!

Because of reciprocal laws it is illegal to use coins from MANY Countries.

If I were you, I wouldn't be posting this question on Yahoo...I'd be calling the US Treasury and asking them!
