it depends what engine the vehicle is equipped with if it is a 2.0l engine or a 1.8 turbo it is recommended at 105k miles recommend replacing timing belt tensioner pulley too. if it is a 1.9 tdi (diesel) w/automatic trans it is recommended at 60k miles. manual trans 1.9l tdi (diesel) 80k. again recommend tensioner pulley too. but some times the belt starts to prematurely crack from age (years not mileage) and should be replaced sooner. if the belt breaks internal damage to the engine could occur and most likely will if it is a 1.8t or 1.9 tdi engine. another item that is common for needing replacement is the waterpump we usually see that they have been seaping or leaking. if you dont do it then you most likely will be doing it shortly after and it cost the same amount as replacing the t-belt so save some money and do both at sametime. depending on labor rate at shop usually $400-500.

I believe VW says 30k but I would call just to make sure. Do not push it to much past what they say. Breaking a belt can cause major damage to the engine witch can cost thousands to fix.

60,000 recommended on any timing belt, get it done, its a interference motor means valve to piston interference if it breaks or jumps and that will be very costly cheaper to get the belt changed at 60,000 miles, use OEM Parts tho

Run a search on the forum for timing belts.

I have a 2001 GLX and I know mine doesn't need that now. I'm only at 52,000 though.

Shop would like 60K. I'd go 80 to 100.
